Four Pitches That Shaped Skubal's Dodger Stadium Debut

The new Dodgers ace did not get a ceremonial cruise. He got early trouble, one seven-pitch inning and a chance to leave the game standing upright.

Seven pitches. That was Tarik Skubal's cleanest inning in his first start at Dodger Stadium, and it arrived only after the Royals had made the grand welcome decidedly untidy. In the fourth, Skubal retired Kansas City in order and finished by throwing a 98.6 mph four-seam fastball past Michael Massey. Short inning. Deep breath.

His full line on August 10 was five innings, four hits, three earned runs, two walks, six strikeouts and 95 pitches. The Dodgers eventually won 6-5. MLB's home-debut account makes clear that this was neither a disaster nor the effortless ace recital suggested by the pregame buzz. It was a repair job conducted in public.

The Royals refused to admire the marquee

Nick Loftin singled on a 98.5 mph fastball in the first. Bobby Witt Jr. reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, then Jac Caglianone drove him home with a single against a 97.8 mph sinker. In the third, Loftin doubled and Caglianone hit a two-run homer on a 91.5 mph slider. The deficit was 3-0. The crowd had come to greet an ace; Kansas City brought a pin to the balloon.

That opponent was familiar with Skubal. On July 25, pitching for Detroit, he struck out 12 Royals in a 2-1 Tigers win. MLB's report from that start says Kansas City missed 10 times on 14 swings against his changeup. August 10 offered the useful counterexample: even a lineup an ace recently mastered gets another vote.

Four pitches tell the shape of the night

  • 98.5 mph fastball: Loftin's first-inning single began the trouble.
  • 91.5 mph slider: Caglianone's third-inning homer made it 3-0.
  • 98.6 mph four-seamer: Massey swung through it to end the seven-pitch fourth.
  • 88.6 mph changeup: Caglianone struck out with two runners aboard to end the fifth.

There is the small victory. Skubal did not solve the same hitter all night, but he solved him when one more ball in play could have widened the gap. He changed speed, stranded two, and handed the game to the bullpen with Los Angeles still close enough to respond. Shohei Ohtani's RBI double and Freddie Freeman's single had already cut the score to 3-2 in the third.

The credentials remain, even on a three-run night

Los Angeles acquired Skubal from Detroit on August 1. The Associated Press identified him as the two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner and noted that the Tigers had drafted him in 2018 and developed him. Detroit's official 2026 game notes add that his second award made him the first repeat American League winner since Pedro Martinez in 1999 and 2000. Those facts explain the roar. They do not guarantee a clean first inning.

The better image came later: a left-hander finishing his fifth by taking a little speed off, then walking toward a new dugout with the game still alive. Debuts love fireworks. This one earned something steadier, a foothold.
