Meet the Other Max Muncy, Who Is Making His Own Name

The Athletics infielder shares a name, a birthday and an old organization with the Dodgers veteran. His own story has a backyard infield, a joyful phone call and a timely Fenway double.

A worn baseball glove, a clean baseball and a small backyard batting net rest on a low table in warm side light, with no people, logos or words.

Max Muncy called his parents with big news, but his mother could not immediately find his father. So Muncy tried to say the important part anyway. His voice broke before the words fully arrived: he had made the Athletics' Opening Day roster. Then he remembered there was still a spring game against the Cubs to play. The Athletics' account of the March 23, 2025 call is a small marvel of timing, emotion and unfinished business.

This is Maxwell Price Muncy, the Athletics infielder born August 25, 2002, not Maxwell Steven Muncy of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The younger Muncy bats and throws right-handed, works around second and third base, and reached the majors in 2025. His MLB player page records a March 27, 2025 debut. The shared name is delightful. It is also capable of swallowing the rest of his biography, which would be a shame.

A transfer opened the gate

Muncy grew up in Camarillo, California. Before he started high school in 2017, his father Mike suggested a transfer to Thousand Oaks High, where former major-league shortstop Jack Wilson coached. Muncy barely knew Wilson when he arrived. Within his first month, he moved from the freshman team to junior varsity and then varsity after hitting what the coach remembered as an absolute nuke in an intrasquad game. MLB's feature on Muncy and Jacob Wilson preserves the progression. Fast stairs.

Jacob Wilson, Jack's son, became Muncy's teammate at Thousand Oaks and later with the Athletics. The two trained nearly every day at the Wilson family's house, which had a backyard infield, batting cage and gym. There is the humane detail a transaction log cannot hold: professional baseball beginning with two teenagers crossing a familiar yard to do the same work again.

Thousand Oaks finished 29-1 and won a Southern Section title in Muncy's senior year. The 2025 Athletics Media Guide lists his .459 average, 11 home runs and 49 RBIs across 28 games. Oakland selected him 25th overall in the 2021 draft. His surname was already familiar to the organization, but the scouting report was his.

The minors supplied one spectacularly loud evening

On August 4, 2024, playing for Triple-A Las Vegas, Muncy homered in three consecutive plate appearances. One was a grand slam. He finished with five hits and eight RBIs in a 21-5 win, according to MiLB's game story. Even in the offense-friendly Pacific Coast League, that is an evening worth saving in a separate drawer.

Later that month, another coincidence arrived. The Dodgers' Max Muncy was rehabbing with Oklahoma City while the Athletics' Max Muncy played for Las Vegas. The younger man collected four hits, including two doubles, in their first professional meeting. MiLB documented the matchup, along with the distinct middle names and their shared August 25 birthday. A novelty game became a very good baseball game for the prospect.

The roster call was earned in plain view

Muncy entered 2025 camp as a non-roster invitee. On March 9, manager Mark Kotsay called him into the office and demanded a stronger impression. Two weeks later, Kotsay brought him back and delivered the happier message: he was going north with the club. The official roster story credits his energy, versatility and spring performance. It also catches him trying to collect himself quickly enough to face the Cubs that afternoon. Joy had a lineup card to respect.

On March 28, one night after his debut, Muncy turned his first major-league hit into a home run in Seattle. The Athletics' March 29 recap records a 7-0 win and Muncy's milestone swing. First hits do not have to clear the wall. His declined to obey the modest version of the assignment.

Then baseball arranged the name tag twice

On June 29, 2026, the two Max Muncys finally appeared in the same major-league game. Both started at third base. Both batted seventh. MLB's account of the meeting says it was only the third game since 1901 in which same-named players occupied the same position and lineup spot. They are not related. They do share a birthday, exactly 12 years apart, and both were drafted by the Athletics. Baseball can overdecorate a coincidence. This one came tastefully furnished.

The younger Muncy had known about the older player since childhood, when his grandparents began tracking the name. By 2026, the oddity had become collegial rather than burdensome. They had met, taken a photo and talked over dinner. The older Muncy offered encouragement; the younger one kept building a separate record.

Fenway gave him a clean signature

On August 9, 2026, the Athletics trailed Boston 3-2 before Jonah Heim's eighth-inning double tied the game. In the ninth, Muncy drove a ball to center and Donovan Walton scored. The MLB Gameday final records a 4-3 Athletics win, while the play-by-play table identifies Muncy's double as the go-ahead hit. It finished a series the Athletics had begun with a 13-1 loss. Two days later, they were leaving Fenway with two wins.

The name coincidence will follow Muncy because it is genuinely funny, not because anyone lacks imagination. Still, his own file is getting easier to spot: backyard repetitions, a first-round selection, three homers in one minor-league night, a mother trying to locate a father during the happiest phone call of spring, and now a double to center at Fenway. Plenty of identity there.

One Max Muncy had the name first. The Athletics' Max Muncy gets to decide what his version will mean.
