College Football Starts Thursday, Then Goes Abroad
The first confirmed Division I window opens August 27 in Youngstown. The FBS follows August 29 with one game in Dublin and another in Los Angeles.
At 6 p.m. Eastern on Thursday, August 27, Mercyhurst is scheduled to visit Youngstown State. That is one of the first confirmed kickoffs on the 2026 Division I calendar. No giant neutral-site production is required. One corner of the season can simply begin at Stambaugh Stadium, with a stream, a local radio call and a Thursday evening that suddenly has plans.
| Date | Matchup | Kickoff | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday, August 27 | Mercyhurst at Youngstown State | 6 p.m. ET | ESPN+ and 570 WKBN radio |
| Saturday, August 29 | TCU vs. North Carolina in Dublin | Noon ET / 5 p.m. Irish time | ESPN |
| Saturday, August 29 | San Jose State at USC | 3 p.m. ET / noon PT | NBC |
Youngstown gets the first small circle
Mercyhurst's schedule announcement calls the August 27 matchup its Week Zero opener. Youngstown State's live 2026 schedule supplies the 6 p.m. kickoff, local radio station and live-stats link. The NCAA's June 3 viewing guide lists ESPN+ for the stream. Provider cards can still move, so checking both live pages on game day is sensible.
Dublin turns Saturday lunch into an international game
The FBS arrival comes Saturday, August 29. TCU and North Carolina meet at Aviva Stadium in Dublin at noon Eastern, 11 a.m. Central and 5 p.m. in Ireland on ESPN. The Aer Lingus event page calls this the fifth consecutive year for the game at Aviva Stadium. More charmingly, both teams leave September 5 empty. North Carolina labels it a bye. TCU does not play again until September 12. The suitcases get a weekend too.
Los Angeles supplies the second FBS kickoff
San Jose State visits USC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at noon Pacific, 3 p.m. Eastern, on NBC. USC formally describes it as a Week Zero matchup, and the Big Ten's television release confirms the network and time. It is a clean two-screen handoff for viewers in the East: Dublin at noon, Los Angeles at three. On the West Coast, coffee can plausibly last through both.
Why August 29 is Week Zero in 2026
The NCAA's standard FBS first-contest date for 2026 is Thursday, September 3, but the rules still permit earlier games through exceptions. One covers foreign competition. Another covers teams scheduled to play in Hawaii and can extend to their first opponent. Dublin plainly fits the first route. San Jose State's official schedule includes an October 3 game at Hawaii, so the second route appears to explain how its USC opener fits. That is an inference from the published rule and schedules, not an NCAA statement about these two contracts.
For 2026, the simple answer is this: college football returns Thursday, August 27, and nationally televised FBS games follow Saturday, August 29. The grand season does not burst through one gate. It clicks on a radio in Ohio, catches a flight to Dublin, then finds the afternoon sun in Los Angeles.
