Ariana Madix is playing Connie Francis, and it fits
The reality star who survived Scandoval is stepping into a role that rhymes with her own story. Here is why the casting is more than stunt booking.
Part of the Screen, stage and celebrity collection.
'Who's Sorry Now?' is a song about being right after being left. Connie Francis recorded it in 1958 and it made her the biggest female voice in the country. A woman stands at its center and tells the man who walked out that he will regret it. She turns out to be correct.
Ariana Madix knows that feeling better than most. On August 17, 2026, the producers of the Broadway musical 'Just in Time' announced that Madix will play Connie Francis in the show. Her run lasts from September 12 through November 22, 2026, at Circle in the Square Theatre. It is a limited engagement, and it is the kind of casting that makes a person stop and grin.
It's a pinch-me moment to be able to come home to the Broadway stage and all I could have ever hoped for.
Here is the detail the headlines did not make room for. Connie Francis became famous singing a kiss-off anthem. Madix became famous surviving a very public betrayal, the one the tabloids named Scandoval. The full circle is almost too tidy, and it is exactly why this casting matters.
The betrayal even earned its own portmanteau. Scandoval, a mash of scandal and Sandoval, trended for weeks in March 2023, and strangers picked sides as if it were a sport. Madix had spent a decade as a supporting player on the show. In one month she became the protagonist of her own life, and she did not waste the moment.
The song itself carries a nice bit of history. 'Who's Sorry Now?' was written in 1923, and Francis had to be talked into recording it in 1958. It went to No. 4 in the United States and No. 1 in the United Kingdom, selling more than a million copies. The song she nearly skipped became the reason the world learned her name.

From a leaked affair to a record-breaking Broadway debut
Most people met Madix on Bravo's 'Vanderpump Rules'. In March 2023, reports broke that her boyfriend of nearly a decade, Tom Sandoval, had been having an affair with a castmate. It turned into a genuine cultural moment, the kind that spawns a thousand group chats. Madix somehow converted the wreckage into momentum. That fall she finished third on 'Dancing with the Stars'. Two months after that she made her Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in 'Chicago', on January 29, 2024.
That 'Chicago' run was not a novelty. Her eight-week engagement kept getting extended as demand held, and People reported that she led the show to its best non-holiday week ever. She returned to the role in August 2024 for another stretch. Broadway, which chews through stunt casting for sport, kept asking her to stay.
In the same statement she said she was beyond excited to work with the legends behind the show. The gratitude reads as earned, not rehearsed, because Madix knows exactly what it costs to get back on a Broadway stage. She has paid that cost twice already, and both times the room asked her to come back.
Why Connie Francis, and why now
Connie Francis died in 2025 at 87. Before that she was, according to NPR, the first woman to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. She sold more than 40 million records before she turned 25 and recorded in nine languages. Her story is a reinvention story, the same as Madix's, which is the quiet reason the two women belong together on one stage.
Francis started life as Concetta Rosa Maria Franconero, a kid from Newark whose father insisted on the accordion. A television host told her to change the name. She stepped onstage as Connie Francis and never looked back. Madix is not impersonating an icon here. She is playing a kindred spirit.
There is a structural reason this works, too. In 'Just in Time', Francis is not the star. Bobby Darin is. She appears as his first love, a fellow teen idol on a parallel rise, and the show treats her as an equal instead of a footnote. A production with less care would have used her as set dressing, one more name to check off in Darin's biography.

What this says about Broadway and reality television
There is a cynical read of this news and it is wrong. Broadway is not slumming. Madix earned the job with a genuinely hot 'Chicago' run, and 'Just in Time' is built to welcome singers, not just names. It is a jukebox musical staged as a swinging 1960s nightclub, with a live big band and cabaret tables instead of orchestra seats. Jeremy Jordan stars as Bobby Darin. The Connie Francis role has cycled through Gracie Lawrence, Isa Briones, and Olivia Holt before Madix steps in.
Whitney Leavitt, of 'The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives', follows her as Sandra Dee starting December 1, 2026. Two reality stars in the same jukebox musical, back to back. That is not a gimmick. It is Broadway finally noticing a thing the audience already knew: these women can sing, and they arrive with a fanbase already in the building.
There is a hard business reason underneath the warm one. A reality star arrives with a built-in audience that will actually buy tickets, and 'Just in Time' needs fresh names to keep a show that opened in April 2025 full. Broadway has always run on star power. What changed is who counts as a star.
Madix has said she is chasing an EGOT, a goal that got more realistic in July 2026 when she earned her first Emmy nomination for hosting Peacock's 'Love Island USA'. The Broadway return lands in September. A woman once reduced to a tabloid punchline keeps walking onto bigger stages and refusing the small part. Sing the kiss-off to whoever doubted her. You will be sorry, and she will be right.
