How Wordle Chooses Its Daily Answer

Wordle is not a dictionary, and its answer is not pulled from thin air each morning. Behind the green and yellow squares sits a short, hand-pruned list of words and an editor who decides what counts as fair.

Part of the Culture and daily life collection.

Type a five-letter guess into Wordle and the tiles answer back in three colors. Green means the letter is right and in the right place. Yellow means it is in the word but somewhere else. Gray means it is not there at all. Six guesses, one word. Everyone knows that part. What fewer people know is where the word itself comes from.

The game runs on two different word lists, not a dictionary. The bigger one is the guess list, around 12,972 words, and it accepts just about any five-letter string the game will recognize as a guess. The smaller one is the answer list, about 2,309 words, and only those can ever be the solution. Wardle's partner, Palak Shah, built that short list by hand, trimming roughly 13,000 five-letter words down to a few thousand familiar ones so a loss would feel fair rather than random.

Wardle called the final shape a hard-won compromise. 'Through that process of refinement, I figured out that five letters and six tries was the ideal sweet spot,' he told Newsweek. There is even a hard mode, which forces you to reuse any green or yellow letters you have already found, turning a guessing game into a deduction problem.

In the beginning the daily answer came from the list in a fixed, coded order, which meant the word was knowable if you read the game's source code. Wardle said he randomized the entries partly so he would not know the next answer. 'I don't actually know what tomorrow's word is going to be,' he said, 'which means that I can take part like everybody else.' The creator wanted to be allowed to play his own game.

When the New York Times bought Wordle, it began treating the answer list the way a paper treats copy. Wordle got its own editor, Tracy Bennett, in November 2022. The team has pruned the list, removing words it considers offensive, outdated or especially hard to deduce, and it edits for American spelling, so 'fibre' is out and 'fiber' is in.

When a word lands wrong

The most famous edit came on May 9, 2022. The word 'fetus' was set to be that day's answer, having been loaded into the game back in 2021, and it landed days after a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion on abortion rights. The Times swapped it to 'shine' for as many players as it could reach. The company said it had noticed the word's scheduled appearance only days earlier and 'switched it for as many solvers as possible,' adding that it wants the game to stay 'a place to entertain and escape' and 'distinct from the news.' It has made quieter swaps too, removing 'slave' and 'lynch' from the list.

The word lists behind Wordle

Answer list
About 2,309 words. Only these can be the daily solution.
Guess list
About 12,972 words the game will accept as guesses.
Format
Five letters, six guesses, with green, yellow and gray feedback.
Hard mode
Reuse any revealed letters in every later guess.
Edited list
The Times has removed words like 'slave', 'lynch' and 'fibre'.

The short answer list is what keeps the game honest. If any five-letter word in English could be the answer, you would lose to words you had never seen. A curated list means every answer is, in Wardle's framing, familiar enough that losing still feels like your own fault, annoying but fair. That is the thin line the whole game walks, and it is why the list has stayed small even as the audience grew into the billions.

All of this is the real answer to how Wordle chooses its word. A short list, pruned by a partner who wanted the game to be fair, shuffled so its creator could play, and now tended by an editor who watches for the one morning a random word would land like a punchline. The daily word feels random. It is anything but, and that care is the nicest thing about it.
