Why More Than One City Can Have ABC7

A channel number is local real estate, not a national serial number. That is why several cities can use a familiar 7 without sharing a station.

Four very different cities share a small broadcast coincidence. Los Angeles has KABC-TV, New York has WABC-TV, Chicago has WLS-TV and San Francisco has KGO-TV. ABC's own station directory lists all four, and each uses an ABC7 identity in its local market.

They are not branches of one coast-to-coast Channel 7. They are separate local stations that happen to use the same familiar number. Think of it less like four apartments accidentally receiving the same mail and more like four streets in different towns all having a house number seven. Geography does the sorting.

Channel numbers are reused where signals do not collide

The key is distance and interference protection, not national exclusivity. FCC rules for broadcast allotments set geographic spacing requirements for stations using the same VHF channel. In the relevant zones, co-channel VHF allotments must be separated by hundreds of kilometers, and applications must protect other stations from predicted interference. That engineering rule is why a channel number can be useful in many far-apart places without becoming a national duplicate.

The signal system cares whether broadcasts overlap in the air. A viewer cares whether their local market has a clear, familiar destination. Those are compatible needs, so the same number can recur. The public gets a simple landmark; engineers get space to keep the landmarks from shouting over one another.

ABC is the shared family name, not the whole address

ABC Owned Television Stations lists eight stations in its group: WABC-TV in New York, KABC-TV in Los Angeles, WLS-TV in Chicago, WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, KTRK-TV in Houston, KGO-TV in San Francisco, WTVD-TV in Raleigh-Durham and KFSN-TV in Fresno. The station call signs and local brands identify which city is which.

That directory supplies the useful surprise: the group is not uniformly ABC7. Philadelphia is 6abc. Houston is ABC13. Raleigh-Durham is ABC11. Fresno is ABC30. The number belongs to the local station's history and channel position, not to an ABC master template.

Digital made the number more durable, not less

There is another wrinkle, and it explains many modern channel puzzles. The FCC says a digital station's virtual channel number is the number viewers see on an over-the-air receiver. Its 2017 decision notes that the number a viewer selects can differ from the RF spectrum channel carrying the signal, in part so stations can preserve a historic brand after technical changes.

That does not make every number imaginary. It means a channel number can serve two related but distinct purposes: a technical allocation and a viewer-facing identity. KABC has the especially tidy case. Its June 2026 FCC notice identifies it as Channel 7 and RF Channel 7, so there is no split to explain in Los Angeles.

Local still matters inside a national network

An ABC badge does not erase the local station beneath it. The FCC says broadcast stations air a mix of network programming, station-produced programming and syndicated programming; stations obtain network shows through affiliation agreements, while their local operations can make their own schedule and programming choices. That is why a search for ABC7 needs a city attached to it.

The cleanest question to ask is which city's ABC7 you mean. It turns a confusing national-looking label into a useful local search.

It is a mildly wonderful arrangement. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco can all wear the same party number while keeping their own call signs, schedules and local voices. The seven is familiar. The city tells you whose seven you have found. For the Los Angeles name decoder, start with what ABC7 means in Los Angeles.
