W China Gives A$AP Rocky and Rocki a New Cover Story
The same masthead can house a separate editorial project. This cover belongs to W China's local edition and a themed issue, not a duplicated U.S. spread.
The letter W does a surprising amount of work on a magazine rack. I took a closer look at A$AP Rocky and Rocki's new cover because a shared masthead can make two related editorial projects look like the very same publication. They are related, but the distinction is useful. This image is a W China cover with its own issue theme and editorial setting, not a replay of Rihanna and Rocki's earlier U.S. W cover.
W China is the Chinese edition of W, launched in 2023 through a local publishing partnership. Sina Fashion's launch report describes it as W's second overseas edition, after W Korea, and names its own chief executive and editor in chief. The report says the first issue was due in April 2023 and that the edition would publish every two months. Those details are the clearest reason not to flatten W China into a mere translated page from another market.
The useful distinction
- W China
- A separately organized Chinese edition launched in 2023 with its own named local leadership.
- The current cover
- A$AP Rocky and Rocki appear in W China's The Love Issue.
- The earlier W cover
- Rihanna and Rocki appeared together in W's U.S. Pop Issue in April 2026.
The Love Issue has its own idea
The current cover is not presented as a one-off repost. The W China announcement carried by Sina says The Love Issue uses the letters L-O-V-E as a framework for four cover subjects from different fields and life stages. It defines those letters as Link, Origin, Vivid and Echo. Rocky appears with his daughter in the issue's family-oriented thread. That is a small, charming piece of magazine architecture: four letters, four people, and a big subject broken into manageable rooms.
I would read the image through that local issue concept first. It is a parent-and-child portrait, certainly, but it also belongs to a project designed around relationships and how they change across a life. BCK Online's September 1 report likewise identifies the cover as part of W Magazine China's Love Issue. The magazine's framing helps explain why this particular pair appears here without pretending that a cover tells us every detail of their home life.
Why the April cover can look like the same story
In April, Rihanna and Rocki appeared on W's Pop Issue. W's own feature calls it Rocki's first public appearance and places it in a large story about Rihanna. ELLE's April 21 account also identifies that appearance as Rocki's cover debut. The family connection and the W name make the April and September images easy to place in one mental folder.
But the cover subjects, edition and editorial premise have changed. April paired mother and daughter in the U.S. Pop Issue. September pairs father and daughter in W China's Love Issue. ELLE's September 3 report is especially helpful on that point because it identifies the latest image as Rocki's second cover and names W China. Same family, familiar logo, different magazine moment.
How to read a shared masthead
A magazine name can travel across editions while the editorial work stays local. I cannot tell from a masthead alone which feature, photography or package belongs to another edition, so I look for the issue name, the local publisher and the publication's own description. Here, the 2023 launch information and the Love Issue announcement provide those signposts. They show that W China has a specific identity rather than functioning as a label pasted onto a U.S. spread.
That is good news for readers, not pedantry. It means a familiar title can introduce you to a different editorial question, a different group of cover subjects and a different way of arranging a story. I am fond of the L-O-V-E device because it gives a broad idea some playfulness without making it vague. A magazine can share a name across borders and still surprise you with a fresh room inside it.
