Before Sunday Singles, 18 Matches Shape the Presidents Cup

The event saves all 24 golfers for Sunday, but its character is set earlier by one-ball partnerships, two-ball partnerships and the peculiar mercy of match play.

A golf scorecard usually invites you to add. The Presidents Cup asks you to forget that habit one hole at a time. I like the format for exactly that reason: a scruffy double bogey can be contained, a short putt can be conceded, and a partner's brilliant recovery can change the temperature of an entire afternoon. The tournament is golf with its individual scoreboard folded into a small, high-stakes conversation.

Under the current Presidents Cup format, 12 United States players and 12 International players contest 30 match-play points across four competition days. Before the 12 Sunday singles matches, there are 18 team matches: five on Thursday, five on Friday and eight on Saturday. The 2026 event schedule lists those rounds for September 24 through September 27 and says the final playing format is subject to confirmation, so the durable part is the format's logic rather than any one tee-time sheet.

First, count holes rather than total strokes

In match play, each hole is its own contest. Win a hole and you go one up. Tie it and the hole is halved. Once a side leads by more holes than remain, the match ends because the other side cannot catch it. The USGA's Rule 3 contrasts that with stroke play, where every stroke is accumulated across the round. We can think of match play as a row of small doors instead of one long hallway.

A match win is worth one point for the team. A halved match gives each side half a point. With 30 points available, 15.5 wins the Presidents Cup outright. In a tied overall contest, the cup is shared, according to the event FAQ and Golf Monthly's format guide. That shared ending is rare, but it keeps every half-point from feeling like a bookkeeping crumb.

Then, learn the two partnership dialects

Foursomes means one ball for a pair. Partners alternate tee shots and alternate every later stroke, so choosing who starts on odd- and even-numbered holes matters immediately. The USGA's Rule 22 calls it alternate shot for good reason. A pair has no spare ball to rescue a mistake. The funny little joy of it is that a player can hit a gorgeous drive and then stand back while a partner gets the next chance to make it count.

Four-ball gives each partner a ball of their own. On a given hole, the side uses the lower score of the two. The USGA's Rule 23 spells out the useful consequence: once one partner has posted a score that cannot be beaten by the opponents, the other may not need to finish the hole. Four-ball has more room for a daring birdie attempt because a partner's safe par can already be in the pocket.

The equipment barely changes. The partnership does.

The week builds toward a full Sunday card

Thursday uses either five foursomes or five four-ball matches, and Friday uses the other format. Saturday supplies eight team matches, split between the two forms. Sunday brings all 24 golfers into 12 singles matches. The event's 2026 schedule places the first four rounds on Thursday, Friday and Saturday before the Sunday finale; the PGA TOUR's format explainer is helpful on the match-play vocabulary behind those sessions.

I would watch the early sessions for chemistry, not merely the running total. Foursomes exposes a pair's trust and four-ball lets complementary games take turns being heroic. By Sunday, every player arrives with a small history from the week - perhaps a partnership that clicked, a hole conceded at the right moment or a comeback that changed the captain's mood. That is why the 18 earlier matches matter.

The charming detail is the concession. In ordinary medal-style golf, a player completes the hole because the total matters. In match play, an opponent can give a short next stroke, turning a tense moment into a tiny nod of sporting agreement. We do not need to romanticize every conceded putt, but it is a lovely reminder that the format is built around a direct relationship between opponents, not a distant leaderboard.

For the related question of who may appear in those partnerships, our International Team guide explains the Europe boundary. The five structural differences with the Ryder Cup provide the wider comparison. Learn the two team formats first, and Sunday singles becomes a finale with a story already in motion.
