Meet Anil Chakravarthy Through Adobe's CEO Handoff and the Work Ahead

Adobe has named Anil Chakravarthy its next CEO for December 1, 2026. His current remit offers a clearer clue to the job ahead than a changing title ever could.

December 1, 2026 is the useful date hiding inside Adobe's leadership news. On that day, Anil Chakravarthy is due to become the company's president and chief executive officer, join its board, and take over from Shantanu Narayen, who will move into the executive-chair role. I like that the announcement gives readers a real runway instead of pretending a handoff of this size happens between one inbox refresh and the next. It also gives us time to ask the better question: what job is Chakravarthy actually being chosen to do?

The short answer is not run Photoshop, although that is the shorthand many headlines reach for. Adobe sells creative tools, but its own filings divide the business into Digital Media, Digital Experience, and Publishing and Advertising. The CEO's job is to lead the management team across that whole house, set and execute strategy with it, and remain accountable to the board. The new appointment is therefore bigger than a product stewardship story. It is a choice about the person who must connect the creative, document, enterprise, sales and customer sides of a very large software company.

The confirmed handoff

Incoming CEO
Anil Chakravarthy becomes Adobe's president and CEO on December 1, 2026.
Outgoing CEO
Shantanu Narayen retires as CEO on that date and becomes executive chair of the board.
Current role
Chakravarthy leads Adobe's Customer Experience Orchestration business and worldwide field operations.
Selection process
Adobe says its lead independent director chaired a special committee that oversaw the CEO selection.
Still unannounced
Adobe has not publicly spelled out a detailed division of day-to-day responsibilities between the new CEO and executive chair.

Start with the work he already leads

Adobe's public profile says Chakravarthy directs the vision and operations of its Customer Experience Orchestration business. That description includes strategy, engineering, product management and product marketing. It also says he has responsibility for worldwide field operations, including enterprise sales, professional services and customer success. That is an unusually broad bridge between the people who make software and the organizations that put it to work.

That bridge helps explain the board's choice without turning it into a prediction. In the September 3 announcement, Adobe said he had expanded the customer-experience business and field operations during more than six years at the company. His earlier résumé includes four years as Informatica's chief executive. We can say the appointment favors a leader who has worked across products and customers. We cannot honestly claim that it guarantees any particular product launch, pricing change, acquisition, or new creative feature. Adobe has announced none of those things.

The specific humane detail here is an unflashy one: professional services and customer success sit in the same current remit as product strategy. Those phrases rarely make a splashy masthead, yet they describe the people who help a giant customer make a complex tool useful on an ordinary Tuesday. For a company whose tools range from individual creative work to enterprise systems, that connective tissue is not a side quest. It is part of the main job.

A CEO runs management. A board chooses, oversees and tests it

Adobe is incorporated in Delaware, where the corporation's business and affairs are managed by or under the direction of its board. That legal sentence can sound grand and foggy, so I would translate it this way: the board selects the CEO and keeps oversight; the CEO leads the company day to day with the executive team. Adobe's governance guidelines make the split more concrete. They describe board attention to strategy and performance, management oversight, risk, ethics, legal compliance, financial controls and board effectiveness.

Those guidelines also say that, if the chair is not the CEO, the chair consults the CEO and executive management about board agendas. The board's executive-compensation chair and, where applicable, the lead director administer the CEO's annual evaluation. This is why an executive chair is neither a ceremonial farewell title nor a second CEO by default. The authority is real, but the boundaries matter. A good handoff makes those boundaries legible inside the company as well as outside it.

Why this moment has more texture than a nameplate swap

Narayen announced in March 2026 that he would step down after a successor was appointed, while remaining chair during the search. Adobe's lead independent director, Frank Calderoni, then led the special committee that considered the selection. By September, the company had named an internal successor and set the December effective date. That sequence has the reassuring shape of a planned succession rather than a sudden vacancy. I think that is the more interesting fact than the corporate title itself.

There is a joyful little marker in the timing, too. Adobe reported on September 10 that it had passed one billion monthly active users across its creativity and productivity solutions. A billion is an abstract number until you picture the wildly different reasons people open those tools: a designer arranging a poster, a student marking a PDF, a small team passing around a pitch, a business trying to make a customer journey less clumsy. It is a crowded, oddly companionable audience for one leadership handoff.

What remains open, and why that is fine

The September 8-K gives the appointment date, the new titles and the board seat. It also says Adobe intends to file a later amendment covering compensation information once that information is determined or available. The public record does not yet set out a full operating map for Narayen as executive chair, a duration for that role, or a catalog of immediate decisions for Chakravarthy. We should not fill those blank spaces with a familiar story about a leader taking the reins and changing everything on day one.

A reader who wants to follow the handoff has a sensible set of landmarks: Adobe's investor filings for the promised compensation disclosure, the December 1 effective date, and the company's subsequent earnings and governance disclosures. Look for confirmed reporting lines, disclosed priorities and named decisions. Ignore the urge to treat a new CEO title as a decoder ring for every future feature.

The useful picture to keep

Chakravarthy is not arriving as a mystery guest from another industry. The public record shows a former software CEO who has spent years leading an Adobe business that links product building, enterprise relationships and customer support. Narayen's move to executive chair keeps a veteran presence in the boardroom, while the board and its lead independent director retain their oversight role. I will take that clear, modest picture over a breathless succession saga. It leaves room for Adobe's next chapter to be written in decisions readers can actually verify.
