Before You Wire Tesla $45,000, Remember Its Nine-Year Roadster Wait
Tesla reopened Roadster reservations at the same $50,000 figure it asked for in 2017. I went back through the delay history, the deposit terms and the one part of this story that already delivered.
"Turns out there was some cargo in the truck." Elon Musk said that in a deadpan voice in November 2017, right before a trailer at the back of Tesla's new Semi truck opened up. A bright red sports car rolled out under the lights. Almost nobody in the building expected it. Tesla had roughly 30,000 employees at the time. The Roadster reveal had been built in near-total secrecy by a small team under chief designer Franz von Holzhausen, according to GeekWire's coverage of that night.
Nine years later, almost to the week, Tesla reopened reservations for that same car. I went back through the numbers because the headline detail is almost too neat to believe: the deposit is $50,000, the exact figure Tesla asked for back in 2017.
The number that never changed
Reserving a Roadster today means putting down $5,000 by credit card, described as fully refundable, then wiring the remaining $45,000 within ten days, for a $50,000 total. That is according to Electrek and Fox Business's reporting on the September 20, 2026 reopening, and it is the same $50,000 figure Tesla collected from the original wave of depositors starting in November 2017. Those buyers were promised a 620-mile range, a 0-to-60 time under 1.9 seconds and a top speed past 250 miles an hour. The base price was set at $200,000, with deliveries meant to start in 2020.
None of that has happened yet. Electrek counts at least eight separate delays since the original announcement, and Musk himself has described the car, almost fondly, as something that keeps losing out to other priorities. On a 2024 earnings call, he called it "the cherry on the icing on the cake" and referred to the earliest buyers as his "long-suffering deposit holders," a phrase that is funnier, and a little more honest, than most corporate language about missed deadlines.
What October 1 is actually promising
Tesla says the redesigned Roadster will be revealed on October 1, 2026 at a SpaceX test site near Waco, Texas. Musk has teased that a limited edition might include cold-gas thrusters developed with SpaceX, the kind of detail that could mean anything from a marketing flourish to an actual hovering demonstration, and Tesla has not said which. Pricing is unannounced, though reporting expects it to clear $250,000. Tesla also has not said how it will treat reservation holders who have already been waiting since 2017, including whether their spot rolls over automatically or needs a fresh deposit under the new terms.
Prediction markets, tracked by Electrek, currently give the Roadster about a 5 percent chance of reaching any customer by the end of 2026, with 61 percent odds pointing to 2027 instead. Betting markets are not a guarantee of anything, but I treat them as a useful gut check against a company whose own executives have spent nine years describing this car as almost ready.
- A reservation is a place in line, not a purchase. Tesla has not published final pricing or a binding delivery date.
- The $5,000 initial payment is described as fully refundable; the following $45,000 wire is due within 10 days of that first payment.
- The car has been delayed at least eight times since November 2017, and no unit has shipped to a customer.
- Tesla has not said how reservations placed since 2017 will be treated once the redesigned car is finally priced.
The part of this story I actually enjoy
None of that skepticism cancels out the original stunt, and it is worth saying plainly. Rolling a finished car out of a semi truck's trailer, in front of a crowd that had come to see a delivery truck, is a genuinely great piece of theater. Keeping that secret from tens of thousands of your own employees takes real discipline, not just hype. Musk's own description of the reservation holders as "long-suffering" suggests even he knows the joke is partly on him at this point. Wherever the Roadster's actual delivery date lands, the trailer reveal is one part of this story we do not have to wait on: it already delivered exactly what it promised, a genuine surprise, pulled off in front of everyone.
