17 Years After BGT, Shaheen Jafargholi Joins Heated Rivalry
The Welsh singer-actor who got a second song on Britain's Got Talent in 2009 now plays Fabian Salah, the hockey-hating musician of Heated Rivalry season 2. Here is his path, his role, and what is still unannounced.
Two lines into Amy Winehouse's "Valerie," Simon Cowell stopped him. It was 2009, the stage was Britain's Got Talent, and the singer was a 12-year-old from Swansea. Cowell asked for a different song. The boy sang "Who's Lovin' You," the Smokey Robinson number the Jackson 5 made famous, and the audience rose to its feet. I kept that second chance in mind while sorting through this week's casting coverage, because it says more about the new Fabian than a press release can.
His name is Shaheen Jafargholi. He is a Welsh actor and singer, born on January 23, 1997, and he plays Fabian Salah in season 2 of Heated Rivalry, the Canadian hockey romance made for Crave that streams on HBO Max in the United States. Entertainment Weekly reported the casting on August 25, 2026, alongside Daniel Diemer as Fabian's partner, Ryan Price.

A talent-show kid who kept working
The audition is still the moment many British viewers attach to him. He went on to the live final of series 3 on May 30, 2009, and finished seventh. Five weeks later, on July 7, 2009, he sang "Who's Lovin' You" again at the memorial service for Michael Jackson at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
His Wikipedia biography adds a story that has followed him ever since: that Motown founder Berry Gordy told Larry King he would sign the boy tomorrow if he were still in the business. I could not trace that to an original transcript, so treat it as a well-traveled anecdote rather than a confirmed quote. It is a lovely one either way.
Then came the part of a child-star story that usually goes quiet. A debut album, When I Come of Age, was announced in September 2010 and never released. The title reads differently now. He did come of age. It just happened on television.
Screen work had actually come first. He played Danny in Torchwood in 2006, years before the audition. As an adult he joined EastEnders as Shakil Kazemi, the son of Bonnie Langford's Carmel, staying from 2016 to 2018. From 2018 to 2023 he was nurse Marty Kirkby on Casualty, a five-year run. Recent credits include Celyn in Lost Boys and Fairies (2024), In Flight (2025) and The Agency.
One line from the EastEnders announcement in April 2016 stuck with me, because it could have been said about this new job word for word:
I've been a fan since I was a little kid so to now be a part of something so iconic is an honour.
The man who loathes hockey
Rachel Reid's own blurb for Tough Guy introduces Fabian with a flat, funny sentence: "Aspiring musician Fabian loathes hockey." PinkNews, describing the book character, calls him an androgynous Lebanese-Canadian musician who reconnects as an adult with Ryan, a gentle giant of a hockey player he knew when they were younger.
On screen, Entertainment Weekly describes Fabian as Ryan's boyfriend and "a popular indie artist in Toronto's music scene," and Ryan as a retired enforcer and defenseman for the Toronto Guardians. Showrunner Jacob Tierney and executive producer Brendan Brady called the pair "bold, complicated, and deeply compelling characters."
Here is the joke I enjoy most. The show's one character with no interest in the standings is being played by someone who arrived as a fan. In a series built on locker rooms and road trips, Fabian is the outsider, which makes him useful: he can ask the questions a newcomer in the audience would ask. If you want the whole book romance before spring, our reader's guide to Tough Guy sets it up without spoiling the ending.
What he has said about the Toronto set
The burst of searches started with a People interview, published September 26, 2026, and conducted at the New York premiere of his HBO drama War on September 22. He was still filming. He called the job "a joy from start to finish" and admitted: "I was honestly in disbelief that I was even going to tape for the part." The line about scale is the one worth reading slowly.
because of how big the show is, I just couldn't believe how small and intimate and sort of, I don't know, safe the whole experience has felt
TV Insider's Swooon got a fan's answer too. Asked what excited him most, he said it was "the fact that the story is being told, period." That is generous. It puts the book couple ahead of his own part.
Where Fabian fits in season 2
Season 2 adapts The Long Game, the sixth novel in Reid's hockey romance series, in which Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov have kept their relationship secret for ten years. PinkNews reports the season also draws on Role Model and Tough Guy. So Justice Smith and Charlie Gillespie arrive as Harris Drover and Troy Barrett, and Emily Hampshire joins as Vanessa.
Filming started in Toronto in August 2026. Entertainment Weekly gives August 17 as the start date. The premiere window is spring 2027. For the business side, including why a Canadian show lands on an American HBO Max menu at all, see how Heated Rivalry crossed from Crave to HBO Max.
What nobody has confirmed yet
We looked for the details fans ask about next, and several are not public as of September 26, 2026. There is no exact premiere date. There is no announced episode count, and nothing on how much screen time Ryan and Fabian get beside Shane and Ilya.
Nobody has said whether Fabian sings on camera, either. My hope is yes. Casting a musician character with a man whose first national audience met him mid-song, and then never letting him sing, would be a strange waste. For now it is a wish, not a fact.
Where to see him before spring 2027
American viewers get an early look. War, George Kay's eight-episode London legal drama built around a celebrity divorce, premieres on HBO on October 1, 2026, with new episodes on Thursdays, according to BroadwayWorld. Sky starts it a day later in Britain. Dominic West and Sienna Miller lead. Jafargholi plays Saeed Masood, a training associate at the firm Taylor & Byrne.
Seventeen years ago a judge asked a nervous kid for another song, and the room stood up. This time nobody had to ask twice. He came to Heated Rivalry as a viewer, and he gets to walk onto its set as the one man in Toronto who would rather be anywhere but a rink.
