Follow the Lone Group of Six Playoff Bid Boise and WMU Chase
Six conferences share one guaranteed College Football Playoff seat in 2026-27. Here is how it is awarded, which dates matter, and the wording question worth watching.
Six conferences, one guaranteed chair. That is the whole arithmetic, and it explains why a September game in Kalamazoo between Boise State and Western Michigan drew national attention. I went through the College Football Playoff's own announcements for the 2026-27 season to lay out how that seat is filled, because the shorthand going around is not always what the CFP itself wrote.
The wording in the CFP's release
The playoff stays at 12 teams this season. In January 2026 the CFP management committee, the 10 FBS conference commissioners plus Notre Dame's athletic director, agreed to keep the format for one more year while it studies changes. Its August release then described the field: the conference champions of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC, plus the highest-ranked team from the American, Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West, the Pac-12 or the Sun Belt, plus the next seven highest-ranked teams. Notre Dame is in if it finishes in the top 12.
Notice the word team. Some coverage, including a Yahoo Sports report on the January decision, describes the sixth guaranteed spot as going to the highest-ranked champion from those leagues. We could not find language in the CFP's August release requiring a conference title for that spot, so treat that detail as worth confirming against the CFP's full selection protocol before you bet your group chat on it. The practical answer is usually the same, since the best-ranked team in those leagues tends to win its league. Usually is doing some work in that sentence.
The change is real. Under the previous system, as Yahoo Sports described it, the five highest-ranked conference champions from any league received automatic bids. Now four places are tied to named power conferences, and the rest of FBS shares one.
Why the Pac-12 sits in this group
The Pac-12 on that list is the rebuilt version, and 2026 is Boise State's first season in it. That puts Boise State and Western Michigan, from the MAC, in direct competition for the same seat. So when they met on Sept. 26, a win was more than a line on a schedule. It was a result a selection committee could lay side by side with every other claim.

How a single game feeds a season-long ranking
The selection committee, chaired this season by Arkansas athletics director Hunter Yurachek, ranks the top 25 each week from November on. According to ESPN, the CFP said in September that it evaluates teams across their full seasons. In my reading, that cuts both ways for the two Broncos. Boise State's 34-27 loss at No. 2 Oregon on Sept. 5 is the kind of close road defeat a committee can weigh with some sympathy. Western Michigan's 13-12 loss at Michigan is stranger, because the NCAA later said that outcome would have been different had replay protocols been followed. We cover why that score stands separately.
There is also a new perk at the top. With the old conference bowl tie-ins removed, the top three seeds now pick their own bowl path in rank order. A reserved-bid team rarely finishes that high, but it has happened. Boise State was the No. 3 seed two seasons ago and played Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31, 2024.
Outsiders have been here before
Western Michigan knows the feeling from the old system. In 2016 the Broncos went 13-0, won the MAC and earned a Cotton Bowl date with Wisconsin. They lost 24-16, but that was the first season in the program's then 111-year history with 10 wins, and it ended with a New Year's bowl. The one-seat rule makes that kind of season more valuable, not less. If you want to follow the race properly, start with the Nov. 3 ranking, find the highest team from those six leagues, and keep an eye on it every Tuesday until Dec. 6. The first Broncos-versus-Broncos game was an early chapter of it.
