After seven Giants seasons, Dexter Lawrence found joy in Cincinnati

From Wake Forest, North Carolina, to Clemson, the Giants and a captain's patch in Cincinnati: the dated path behind the joy everyone is suddenly asking about.

A warm stylized map with a dotted path winding from green pine hills in the south up through rolling orange hills to a sunny riverside city, with one tiny football resting at the end of the route.

The first thing Dexter Lawrence did at the Bengals' stadium was bend down and pick up a little turf. "I got chills when I went out there," he told reporters in April 2026. I traced his career backward from that moment, because the joy people keep searching for makes more sense once you see the seven years that came before it.

The path in dates

  • November 12, 1997: Born in Wake Forest, North Carolina. He later played at Wake Forest High School.
  • 2016: Arrives at Clemson and sets the school's freshman record with five sacks on the way to ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year.
  • 2017 and 2018: First-team All-ACC both years; first-team All-American in 2018.
  • 2019: The Giants draft him No. 17 overall.
  • 2022 to 2024: Three straight Pro Bowls, plus second-team All-Pro in 2022 and 2023.
  • May 2023: Signs a four-year, $90 million extension with New York.
  • 2024: A career-high nine sacks in 12 games. The Giants finish 3-14.
  • 2025: Half a sack. The Giants finish 4-13.
  • April 6, 2026: Requests a trade after extension talks stall.
  • April 18, 2026: Traded to Cincinnati for the No. 10 overall pick.
  • September 2026: Voted a Bengals captain, then wins his first two games in stripes.

The losing part of the story

Lawrence was very good in New York. The team around him mostly was not. Sports Illustrated's Jay Morrison counted double-digit losses in six of his seven Giants seasons, including those last two. That is a long time to be one of the best players at your position on a team that is rarely in the conversation by December.

We are not going to guess at private feelings he has not shared. His own words are enough. Asked in September whether he had rediscovered his joy, he said, "Probably a little bit, yeah," then grinned and corrected himself: "Probably a lot bit." He also mentioned his body, saying he was "a lot more healthier than I was last year."

Old friends and a new patch

Cincinnati was not a room full of strangers. His Clemson teammate Tee Higgins plays receiver there, and on the day he arrived Lawrence listed him by nickname among the people he was glad to join: "to be back with Tee again." He also singled out a young linebacker from his old school, Barrett Carter, with a two-word scouting report: "Special. Especially the kid from Clemson."

Then came the vote. Five months after the trade, his new teammates made him a captain. "There's a ton of pride, just to be acknowledged by your peers, your brothers," he said. For a player who had spent most of his career on losing teams, that is the kind of earned triumph that does not need decoration.

About the dance

Wikipedia notes that teammates call him "Sexy Dexy," and the name follows him to a sack dance fans ask about whenever they see him. I could not find a documented story of who first coined the nickname, so I am leaving that part alone. What is documented is that he performed the dance during introductions before his first Bengals game on September 13, 2026. "Saving it for showtime," he told sideline reporter Joe Danneman.

Before that game, in April, he had described the notes he writes to himself. One says, "Let my light shine all the time." Right after it he added a reminder to keep joy. Plenty of athletes say something like that at an introductory press conference. Fewer are still saying it in September, in front of a home crowd, with a captain's patch on the jersey.

If the business side of the move interests you more than the man, our breakdown of why the Bengals paid a No. 10 pick covers the price and the plan. This page is for the other question: how a kid from Wake Forest spent seven hard years in New Jersey and came out the other side still wanting to dance.
