AP Top 25 vs. CFP rankings: which list picks the playoff

Three top 25s run through a college football season, and only one of them builds the 12-team bracket. Here is who makes each list and when the one that counts arrives in 2026.

Two tall blank ranking boards stand side by side on a sunlit lawn, one plain and one topped with a small gold bracket shape, with a gate between them opening onto a path.

Until early November, there is no official College Football Playoff ranking at all. The selection committee's first top 25 of the 2026 season goes live on ESPN at 7 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, November 3. Before that, every number beside a team's name on a scoreboard comes from a poll. I understand why the two get blurred. Both are top 25 lists, both use the same numerals, and by late November they often look alike. They are built very differently, and only one of them decides who plays.

Picks the playoff?NoNoYes, the field and the seeds

The AP poll is a sum of individual ballots, 69 of them in the 2026 preseason poll if you add the first-place votes. The Coaches Poll, known since 2023 as the US LBM Coaches Poll, is also a weekly ballot, with head coaches doing the voting. A committee is a different animal. It meets as a group, argues in a room and produces one list together.

How the committee turns a ranking into a bracket

I went to the College Football Playoff's own August 6 release for this part, and the 2026 rules are plain. The field has 12 teams. The champions of the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC are in, along with the highest-ranked champion from the American, Conference USA, the MAC, the Mountain West, the Pac-12 or the Sun Belt. The next seven highest-ranked teams fill the rest, and Notre Dame is included if it finishes in the top 12.

One change this year is genuinely charming. With conference bowl tie-ins removed from the process, the top three seeds now choose their own bowl path, in rank order. Finishing first has always earned respect. In 2026 it also earns first pick of the road.

It also polices itself. Under its recusal policy, a member is recused if they or an immediate family member are paid by a school, and the published list for 2026 shows the chair, Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek, recused for Arkansas. A poll ballot is one person's opinion. The committee's list carries a conflict-of-interest policy because it carries consequences.

When the lists disagree

Disagreement is the norm rather than the exception. The AP poll and the Coaches Poll have crowned different national champions 11 times, most recently in 2003. The AP later asked that its poll be dropped from the BCS formula, and 2004 was the last season it counted.

Selection Day can still surprise people. In 2025, NCAA.com's record shows Ohio State at No. 1 in all five weekly committee rankings, then Indiana at No. 1 on Selection Day, December 7. Indiana went on to win the national title, which is a lovely finish for a program that SI lists at No. 20 in the 2025 preseason AP poll.

Which list to trust, and when

My rule of thumb is simple. Through September and October, the AP Top 25 is the best public read on how informed people see the sport, and its "others receiving votes" line is worth scanning for the next surprise. From November 3 onward, if your question is whether a team is in, only the committee's list answers it.

Keep the two in their lanes and the weekly noise gets easier to enjoy. The polls are a conversation. The committee is the one that hands out the tickets, and this year the top three seeds even get to pick where they go.
