3 years, $165 million: how Baker Mayfield's Bucs deal works
Baker Mayfield's extension with Tampa Bay runs through 2029 at $55 million a year, but the reported guarantees range from $110 million to $150 million. Here is why, and how he got from a waiver claim to the richest deal in Bucs history.
In December 2022, exactly one NFL team put in a waiver claim for Baker Mayfield. On September 8, 2026, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed to pay him $165 million for three more seasons. I keep coming back to the distance between those two facts, because it is less than four years wide.
Most of the people now searching his name want the contract explained, and the coverage has not made that easy. Different outlets report different guarantee totals. None of them is wrong, exactly. They are counting different things.

Why the guarantee numbers do not match
Pro Football Rumors reports $110 million in new guarantees attached to the extension. Stack the roughly $40 million already guaranteed for 2026 on top and its total reaches $150 million. Over The Cap's contract page lists $120 million in guarantees instead, with $70 million of it fully guaranteed at signing, plus a void year in 2030 that exists only to spread the salary cap charge.
NFL contracts carry several kinds of guaranteed money. Some is fully guaranteed the day the deal is signed. Some is protected only against injury. Some becomes guaranteed on a set date in a future offseason if the player is still on the roster. Trackers also disagree about whether to count salary from the old contract that the new one absorbs. The Buccaneers' own announcement gave no guarantee figure at all, and I could not find an official breakdown by category, so treat any single number as one outlet's method rather than the final word.
The practical reading is simpler. On the reporting available, the seasons from 2026 through 2028 look well protected. The 2029 season does not. Yahoo Sports described that last year as working like a team option, which lets Tampa Bay decide later whether a 34-year-old Mayfield is still worth the price.
Where $55 million a year ranks
The average ties Mayfield with Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence and Matthew Stafford, according to both Pro Football Rumors and Yahoo Sports. Yahoo added that his guarantee total trails only Dak Prescott and Patrick Mahomes. Owner Joel Glazer's statement called it the largest contract in franchise history.
From the moment Baker arrived, he brought a belief and competitive edge that has had a tremendous impact on our football team.
The summer the talks stopped
This deal almost did not happen before the season. In March 2024 Mayfield signed a three-year, $100 million contract, and on July 28, 2025, Tampa Bay reworked it to guarantee his 2026 salary, CBS Sports reported. That left 2026 as a guaranteed contract year with nothing beyond it.
Mayfield set a training camp deadline for a new deal. ESPN reported that the Bucs' last offer before camp was a two-year deal worth slightly above $100 million in total, and NBC Sports relayed that he was looking for about $50 million a year and called the offer "pretty far" from that. On July 28, 2026, FOX Sports reported that talks had ended and he would play the season out. The AP later wrote that he had felt "disrespected." Then, five days before the opener, both sides moved.
My read is that the third year was the whole fight. Tampa Bay offered two. Mayfield wanted three, Yahoo reported. The final deal has three, so on length he won, while the nonguaranteed 2029 hands some certainty back to the team. For a standoff that had publicly ended in July, that is a tidy place to land.
The contract ladder that led here
| Signed | Team | Deal | How it ended |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2018 | Cleveland Browns | 4 years, $32.7 million rookie deal as the No. 1 pick | Traded to Carolina, July 6, 2022 |
| 2022 | Carolina Panthers | Final rookie-deal year, after a $3.5 million pay cut | Waived December 5, 2022 |
| 2022 | Los Angeles Rams | Claimed off waivers December 6, 2022 | Expired after the season |
| 2023 | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 1 year, $4 million base, up to $8.5 million with incentives | Re-signed |
| 2024 | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 3 years, $100 million | Extended |
| 2026 | Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 3-year extension, $165 million, through 2029 | Active |
If I had to frame one number from that table, it would be the 2023 base salary of $4 million. Tampa Bay was replacing Tom Brady and did it with a one-year deal it could have walked away from. By the Buccaneers' count, he then threw 95 touchdown passes from 2023 through 2025, second in the NFL, for 12,237 yards, third. Two NFC South titles came with it, and a 32-9 wild-card win over Philadelphia on January 15, 2024, when he threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns.
The 2024 season was the peak: 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and a 71.4 percent completion rate. Only three other quarterbacks had ever combined 4,000 yards, 40 touchdowns and a 70 percent completion rate in one season, according to the team.
What the money does not settle
The 2025 season was his quietest in Tampa. He started all 17 games and threw for 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, and the Bucs finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs, the AP noted. ESPN counted 51 starts over the previous three seasons, tied with Jared Goff and Josh Allen for the most, along with 116 sacks, the fourth-most.
That is the bet in one line. Tampa Bay is paying for durability as much as for touchdowns, and the contract is built so the team can walk away from the last year if the hits catch up with him. You can call that cautious. I would call it fair to both sides.
Mayfield will be 34 when the deal runs out. The waiver claim that started this chapter is not yet four years old, and the team that once offered him $4 million now owes him more than any player it has ever signed. Contracts are rarely this good at telling a story.
