Follow a Netflix Remind Me alert to release day

One tap on an upcoming title sets off a small chain of events. Here is each step, including what happens when the date moves.

Seven years ago this month, on September 5, 2019, Netflix announced a reminder button along with a new Latest tab split into three rows: New This Week, Coming This Week and Coming Next Week, according to the company's own announcement. I went back to that post because the feature is small, and small features are the ones nobody explains.

Here is the journey a single reminder takes, from the moment you spot a future title to the morning it lands.

Step 1: find a title with a future date

Netflix's reminder help page says you may see future release dates on some shows and movies, with a button to be reminded. The usual places to find them are the New & Popular section (also labeled Latest or New & Hot depending on device) and the coming-soon rows, per the help article on finding new titles.

Step 2: tap once

That is the whole setup. The title joins a row called Reminders You've Set on the profile page of the TV and mobile apps. To check a single title, search for it; to cancel, select the check mark.

Step 3: wait for release night

Originals unlock at 12:00 a.m. Pacific, which is 3 a.m. Eastern, per the Netflix Help Center. Licensed titles unlock at local midnight instead. So an East Coast reminder for a Netflix original typically fires in the small hours, which is either a thoughtful alarm or a menace, depending on how close your phone sleeps to your pillow.

Step 4: three ways it finds you

Netflix lists them plainly: an alert inside the app, an email, and the title appearing in your saved list. That last route is the one I like most. Even if you swipe every notification away, the show is quietly waiting where you already look.

Step 5: what happens if the date slips

Dates move, and Netflix says why: delays in video production or in finalizing licensing contracts. When a release is pushed, the title can vanish from the coming-soon listings until a new date is known.

Your reminder does not vanish with it. Titles you flagged still land in your saved list once they are released, according to the same help page. Software rarely keeps a promise through a scheduling change, and this deserves a little credit for doing so.

What the button will not do

The help page's wording is careful: you may see a future date with a reminder option. Not every upcoming title carries one on every device, and a title with no announced date has nothing to count down to. If the button is missing, a monthly list from Netflix or a specialist site is the backup.

It also will not tell you about something you never flagged. For broader alerts, Netflix offers opt-in emails about newly added shows and movies, plus push notifications for recommendations, per its help article on new titles. Those are wider nets. The reminder is a single hook for a single fish.

A feature that started on the big screen

The rollout order is a small clue about where the feature was expected to matter. TechCrunch reported at launch that TV apps came first, with game consoles and Roku confirmed that day, smart TVs promised within a couple of months, and iOS still in testing. My read is that the reminder was built for the couch first and the pocket second.

Three habits that make it work

  • Set reminders only for titles you would genuinely drop plans for; a crowded list becomes noise.
  • Turn on Netflix emails if app notifications are off, so at least one route stays open.
  • When a date changes, trust the saved list rather than re-searching the title every week.

The broader release pipeline, from monthly lists to live events that ignore the midnight rule, is laid out in this package's main guide. The reminder is the last, smallest link in that chain. It is also the one that does the remembering for you.
