Rublev has 10 Grand Slam quarterfinals but no semifinal yet

Every one of Andrey Rublev's major quarterfinals ended in defeat. Here is who beat him, why the record is less damning than it sounds, and what has changed since 2024.

A row of ten identical closed doors along a bright sunlit corridor, with an eleventh door at the end standing slightly open and warm light spilling out.

Ten times Andrey Rublev has walked on court for a Grand Slam quarterfinal, and ten times he has walked off beaten. Tennis Majors calls him the only player in the history of the sport to lose his first 10 at that stage. I expected that record to read as a curse when I went through the matches one by one. It reads more like a run of very bad timing.

The ten matches, in order

Rublev's Grand Slam quarterfinals. The 2020 French Open was played after the US Open that year because of the pandemic calendar.

Look at the right-hand column before you judge the left. Three of those men, Nadal in New York in 2017, Djokovic in Melbourne in 2023 and Sinner in Melbourne in 2024, went on to win the whole tournament. Sinner's 2024 title was his first major. Medvedev beat Rublev three times. That is less a pattern of choking than a pattern of arriving at the door just as the best players of the era are walking through it.

The rankings explain most of it

The cleanest analysis we found came from the Tennis Abstract blog in January 2024, written before the Sinner match. Its central point was blunt: Rublev had been the lower-ranked player in seven of his first nine major quarterfinals. The favorite usually wins those matches. Losing them is what the numbers expect.

The same post made a point I think gets lost. At the time, Alexander Zverev was the only other man under 30 with ten major quarterfinals. Reaching the last eight that often takes a very high floor. From 2020 to early 2024, Rublev kept knocking on the door of the final weekend while most of his peers never reached the corridor.

Two losses that stung differently

Not every one was a mismatch. At Roland Garros in 2022 he took Marin Cilic to a deciding-set tiebreak before losing. At the 2022 US Open, as the higher seed, he lost 7-6(3), 7-6(0), 6-4 to Frances Tiafoe, who never dropped serve and won the second tiebreak without conceding a point.

That one comes with a consolation that isn't Rublev's but is still worth enjoying. The win made Tiafoe the first American man to reach the US Open semifinals since Andy Roddick in 2006, and the first African American man to do it since Arthur Ashe in 1972. Somebody's worst quarterfinal was somebody else's greatest night in New York.

Why the count has stalled at ten

The bigger problem is that he hasn't been getting back to the quarterfinals at all. Since January 2024 his best major results have been fourth rounds. In 2026 he lost in the third round in Melbourne, in five sets to Jakub Mensik in the fourth round in Paris, and in the first round at Wimbledon on a 14-12 fifth-set tiebreak against Roman Safiullin. At the US Open he lost in the second round to Daniel Merida.

Rublev has said himself that the gap is partly mental. After the 2023 Australian Open quarterfinal, a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 loss to Djokovic, he insisted he had still taken a step forward:

Mental-wise I feel this Slam was much better than the previous ones, so for sure I feel I'm a better player, I feel better physically also.

That's the job Marat Safin took on in 2025. Nobody hired a two-time major champion to fix a forehand.

The case for an eleventh

My honest read is that the next quarterfinal is more likely than the record suggests, because the fight is still there. At this year's US Open he trailed Otto Virtanen by two sets, both lost in tiebreaks, then won the next two 6-0, 6-2 and took the fifth-set tiebreak 10-5. Players who have stopped believing don't win that match. He also won his 18th title in Båstad in July 2026.

So if you searched to find out whether Rublev has ever reached a Grand Slam semifinal, the answer is no, not yet. The fuller answer is that he has knocked on that door more often than almost anyone of his generation, usually against someone holding the key. The Australian Open in January 2027 is his next chance to get to an eleventh, and we'll be glad to update this page if he wins it.
