Scottie Scheffler's Dominance Rests on Ball-Striking and a Putting Fix

The world No. 1 was already hitting the ball like 2006 Tiger Woods. What changed was a text sent from an airplane, a mallet putter and a teacher he has had since he was a small boy in long pants.

A sunny flat illustration of a Texas practice range in the morning: a small child-sized golf bag with short clubs leaning on a wooden bench beside a neatly folded pair of long trousers, a pyramid of range balls, oak trees and a distant flag under a big bright sky.
Long pants, a short bag and a very long morning at the range. Illustration: Joyful Take.

At the 2023 Memorial Tournament, Scottie Scheffler ranked last in the field in strokes gained putting, losing 8.52 shots on the greens, and still finished one shot out of a playoff. I keep coming back to that line from a PGA Tour equipment report. It holds the whole puzzle. The ball-striking was already historic. The putting was the leak. Fix the leak and you get the world No. 1 people keep typing into search bars.

A small boy in long pants at Royal Oaks

The origin story sounds too tidy, but the Associated Press reported it with care in April 2025. Scheffler was 6 when his family moved from New Jersey to Dallas after his mother took a senior job at a Dallas law firm. The first visit to Royal Oaks Country Club came on Mother's Day. Randy Smith, the club's longtime teacher, remembered a tiny kid with a long backswing who kept making solid contact for close to two hours. The next day, according to that AP story, his parents took out a loan and joined the club.

My favorite detail from the same piece is about clothes. People around Royal Oaks remember young Scottie wearing long pants in the Texas heat, because that is how tour players dressed and that is what he meant to become. He spent hours around the practice area, challenging older players to chipping and putting contests.

He was a sponge. But he was a workaholic.

Smith is still the only swing coach Scheffler has had. That matters more than it sounds. Tour players change teachers constantly, chasing a few yards or a new ball flight. Scheffler kept the unusual, lively footwork that fans call the Scheffler shuffle, and nobody coached it out of him. In March 2024, in the middle of a hot streak, Smith told GOLF.com exactly how much tinkering was going on: "We're working on nothing. Absolutely nothing. Just go play golf."

Tee to green, one season in the data beats his

Strokes gained is the stat that turned golf talk into arithmetic. It compares each shot with what an average tour player would do from the same spot. In 2023, Scheffler gained 2.62 strokes per round from tee to green, according to the PGA Tour. Since tracking began in 2004, only Tiger Woods in 2006, at 2.98, has done better.

In plain terms, he hits more greens from better places than almost anyone in the modern record, and he does it week after week. That 2023 season produced 17 top-10 finishes in 23 starts. It also produced just two wins. That gap bothered him.

The text sent from an airplane

The 2023 season ended at East Lake with Scheffler tied for sixth, 11 shots behind Viktor Hovland. On the flight home to Dallas he texted Phil Kenyon, an English putting coach he had only said hello to a few times. The PGA Tour's reconstruction says Kenyon was in Dallas within three days.

The diagnosis was physical, not mystical. Scheffler felt his hands were doing too much in the stroke, which produced heel strikes and pulled putts. The two tested about a dozen putters over several weeks. In March 2024 he put a TaylorMade Spider mallet in the bag at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and won that week. The same putter went on to win the Players, the Masters, the Olympics and the Tour Championship.

I find that sequence genuinely cheering. The best player in the world admitted a weakness, asked a near stranger for help and gave up the style of putter he had used for most of his career. Plenty of golfers with far less to protect would have protected their pride instead.

What the trophy shelf holds

2022First PGA Tour win at the WM Phoenix Open, then his first Masters title
2024Second Masters, Olympic gold in Paris after a closing 62, first FedEx Cup
2025PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, then The Open at Royal Portrush by four shots
2026Wins at The American Express, the FedEx St. Jude Championship and the Tour Championship, a second FedEx Cup, and a pass of Tiger Woods on the career money list

The Paris gold was pure theater. Scheffler started the last day four shots back, shot 62 and set an Olympic 72-hole record of 19 under, the PGA Tour reported. A year later at Royal Portrush, The R&A noted that his fourth major arrived 1,197 days after his first, exactly the same gap as Tiger Woods. The R&A then added, drily, that Woods won 15. Coincidences do not win golf tournaments, but they make lovely footnotes.

This year he won in January, then collected five runner-up finishes, including a Monday playoff loss to Hovland at the Travelers, MG Golf's season ledger shows. August fixed that. Wins in Memphis and at East Lake made him, per NBC Sports, only the third player with more than one FedEx Cup title, after Woods and Rory McIlroy.

The one format that still argues back

He is not invincible, and the exception is instructive. In foursomes, the alternate-shot format of the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup, Scheffler was 1-8-0 across both events after a Friday loss at Medinah, the PGA Tour reported. Captain Brandt Snedeker sat him for the Saturday afternoon foursomes on September 26, 2026.

What he did on Sunday, September 27, says more about him than any statistic. In his singles match against Nico Echavarria, a fan yelled "Go Scottie" during Echavarria's backswing on the par-4 14th. Scheffler walked toward the gallery and was heard saying "There's no place for that." After missing his own birdie putt, he conceded Echavarria's 30-foot par putt and halved the hole, then won the match 2 and 1, according to the PGA Tour. It was his first Presidents Cup singles win. Data Golf's records show singles losses in 2022 and 2024.

Why the answer is simpler than it looks

Ask why Scottie Scheffler is so good and the honest answer has three plain parts. He strikes the ball better than anyone since peak Woods. He fixed his putting by asking for help instead of guarding his pride. And he has spent more than two decades with the same teacher at the same Dallas club, where a boy in long pants once challenged the older players to putting contests. We looked for a secret beyond that and could not find one. I suspect there isn't one, which is the most encouraging thing about him.
