A Field Guide to France's 13 Top 10 Men, Noah to Fils

Since the rankings began in 1973, only 13 French men have cracked the top 10. Here is the whole club, the peak that still belongs to Noah, and the five-year gap Fils just closed.

Lucas Pouille was the most recent French man to make his debut in the ATP top 10, in 2018. So there was something sweet about franceinfo quoting him, on September 27, 2026, about the next one. His verdict was one short sentence: "Il ne va pas s'arrêter là." He won't stop there. We liked it enough to go back and build the whole list Pouille was handing on.

The club is small. According to franceinfo, Arthur Fils became the 13th French man to reach the top 10 when the rankings dated September 28, 2026 put him at No. 9. The rankings only began in 1973, so earlier French greats cannot appear here at all.

The summit still belongs to Noah

No French man has ranked higher than Yannick Noah, who reached No. 3 on July 7, 1986. He won the 1983 French Open over Mats Wilander and, per his biography, remains the most recent Frenchman to win the men's singles there. Then he became a captain, and in 1991 led France to its first Davis Cup title in 59 years, against a heavily favored United States team.

The 1991 coincidence

The man who won the deciding rubber of that 1991 final was Guy Forget, who beat Pete Sampras to clinch it. Forget had reached No. 4 in March that year, and that summer he also won Cincinnati, again over Sampras. Here is the nice part. The Cincinnati Open says that until August 23, 2026 Forget was the only French man to win its title in the Open Era. Fils is the second, 35 years later. I have rarely seen a gap in a record book close so neatly.

The No. 10 club inside the club

Three players on the list peaked at exactly No. 10: Thierry Tulasne in 1986, Arnaud Clement in 2001 and Pouille in 2018. That is not a knock. Getting there once is the hard part, and a No. 10 week is still a week among the best ten players on earth. Fils has already edged past them at No. 9, which is what made Pouille's words feel like a handoff rather than a compliment.

The quiet years

The list also has holes, and they tell a story. French Wikipedia's record page notes years in which no French man was ranked in the top 10, including 1995 to 1997, 1999, 2005 and 2006, and a longer run from 2021 to 2025. Monfils, the last one in before that gap, was there in October 2020, according to franceinfo. For a country that hosts a Grand Slam and still stages a Masters event in Paris, five years outside the top 10 was a long wait.

How to read the list

A top 10 ranking is a snapshot, not a verdict. Tsonga, fifth at best, won two Masters 1000 titles and reached a Grand Slam final, as his biography records, while Forget, one place higher, built his legend largely in Davis Cup. Use the peak ranking to see who reached the top table. Use the careers to see what each did once they sat down at it.

Fils is at the very start of that second part. Our main profile covers the injury he came back from and the Tsonga comparison in detail. For now the list has a 13th name, the drought is over, and the man who held the most recent spot has already said he expects the newcomer to keep climbing. Clubs rarely welcome new members that graciously.
