The Long Basketball Shorts in Adam Sandler's Signature Style
The shorts are part comfort, part running gag and part proof that a celebrity outfit can become memorable precisely because it refuses to act like a costume.
A pair of long basketball shorts has no business becoming a celebrity calling card, which is exactly why it works. I find Adam Sandler's clothes more amusing than aspirational: the oversized shirt, the roomy shorts and the sneakers make him look perpetually five minutes away from a pickup game, even in places designed for velvet ropes. The short answer is comfort. The better answer is that the outfit began with a joke and kept its nerve long enough to become a public character trait.
The clothes started with a comic reveal
In a 2025 Pardon My Take interview reported by CinemaBlend, Sandler said the baggy look began during his early Saturday Night Live years as a way to conceal what he described, jokingly, as a very good beach body before revealing it at the beach. He also said that he now goes loose because it should be hidden. It is hard to improve on that explanation. The outfit contains its own before-and-after punchline.
That does not mean every enormous T-shirt is a carefully staged gag. The recurring pieces are genuinely athletic ones: basketball shorts, sneakers, polos, hoodies and T-shirts. Vogue's 2021 style profile described the combination as huge basketball shorts, oversized polos and untied basketball shoes. The proportions are the point. Nothing looks like it was squeezed into a celebrity stylist's emergency garment bag.
The court explains the outfit better than a red carpet does
There is also a literal basketball connection, not merely a fashion metaphor. In January 2024, AP reported that Sandler played a three-on-three pickup game at Arizona's McKale Center wearing a Hawaiian-style shirt and turquoise shorts. A later Netflix Tudum interview records him talking about playing in a high-school gym and comparing the focus of a one-on-one game with the focus needed for a film scene.
I would not turn those reports into a diagnosis of his wardrobe. They simply make the clothes less random. Basketball shoes and long shorts are practical on a court; wearing them outside it turns practical gear into a visual refusal to become overly polished. The joke lands because the base outfit still looks useful.
How a habit became Sandlercore
Fashion writers eventually gave the look a name: Sandlercore. GQ's 2024 guide describes the familiar ingredients as an oversized polo or shirt, long shorts and performance sneakers, but argues that the hard part is not finding the pieces. It is the uncalculated quality. Once someone is laboring over an outfit to look like Sandler, the original easygoing effect has already slipped away.
That is the joyful contradiction. A uniform that appears to reject fashion became a fashion reference precisely because it is recognizable. In 2021, Vogue noted that searches for celebrity style had put Sandler ahead of several conventionally glamorous stars. The charming detail is not the size of the shirt. It is that a look built around ease became legible enough for strangers to name it.
The part worth borrowing
We should be careful with the word style here. Sandler's clothes are not a universal shopping list, and none of the reporting establishes a particular brand formula. They work as a public signature because he has repeated them long enough for the repetition itself to mean something. A loose fit, a bright sneaker or an old shirt will not magically produce the effect.
What remains useful is simpler: wear what you can move in, and let an outfit have a little sense of humor. The long shorts have lasted because they carry both ideas at once. They are comfortable, and they know they are funny. That is a more durable style lesson than any rule about hems.
