Christian Bale Plays the Man Who Hired John Madden

Al Davis was a coach, executive, commissioner and owner before he became Christian Bale's character. His bond with Madden ends with one especially graceful returned favor.

Christian Bale's character is the man who handed a 32-year-old assistant the Raiders' top coaching job. Al Davis selected John Madden in 1969, after Madden had spent two seasons as an Oakland assistant. Madden then coached the team for ten seasons without a losing record. The Pro Football Hall of Fame traces that promotion.

Six football jobs fit inside one biography

Calling Davis only an owner flattens him. The Hall of Fame lists six professional-football roles: player-personnel assistant, assistant coach, head coach, general manager, league commissioner, and principal owner and chief executive. He arrived at the Raiders in 1963 at age 33 as head coach and general manager. A team that had gone 9-33 over its first three seasons finished 10-4 in his first year. The Hall's Davis profile supplies the résumé and turnaround.

There is a delightful smaller fact behind the hard football image: Davis earned a degree in English from Syracuse University. He later became the American Football League commissioner in 1966 and returned to the Raiders as their managing general partner. The Raiders' official history follows those changes of title.

The owner-coach bond had a second act

Madden's coaching record under Davis was 103-32-7 in the regular season, and Oakland won Super Bowl XI. He later moved to broadcasting, but the connection endured. When Davis entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992, Madden served as his presenter. Fourteen years later, Davis presented Madden for the Hall's class of 2006. The official presenter ledger confirms the exchange.

Davis presented nine Hall of Fame inductees, the most by any presenter listed by the Hall. Madden was the last of those nine. The Raiders' Davis biography records both the total and the returned favor. It is a better character note than any pile of office décor: each man eventually stood up in Canton to explain why the other belonged there.

What the movie has confirmed

Amazon MGM's Madden casts Bale as Davis opposite Nicolas Cage as Madden. David O. Russell directs, Sienna Miller plays Carol Davis, and Kathryn Hahn plays Virginia Madden. The production company announced those roles when filming began in May 2025. Variety's August 7 release report describes the Davis-Madden friendship as part of the film.

So watch Bale's Davis as more than the person in the owner's box. He is the former English major who knew coaching from the inside, chose an unusually young head coach, and received his Hall of Fame introduction from that same hire. Then he gave the introduction back. Football can be loud; gratitude sometimes arrives at a lectern.
