What the Lord of Mysteries Novel Is About
The game everyone is suddenly searching for came from a book, and the book is stranger than most. Here is the plot, the world, and the tarot-card trick at its heart.
Part of the Fandom and screen collection.
There is a scene early in Lord of Mysteries where a man wakes up in someone else's body. Not as a metaphor. Zhou Mingrui, a modern office worker, comes to inside the corpse of Klein Moretti, a university graduate who has just died, and has to fake being him while a foggy city of secret cults closes in.
That is the hook of one of the biggest Chinese web novels of the past decade, and the reason a video game adaptation just broke records on its first day. The book runs long, darker and weirder than most imports, and its magic has rules, which is a big part of why people love it.
The setup, without spoilers
The story is set in a world that feels like late Victorian England, all gas lamps, steam, fog and hidden fraternities. It is dark fantasy with a strong Lovecraft streak, and it is not kind to its characters. Klein finds work with a secretive outfit that quietly handles supernatural trouble, and learns that power here comes in a bottle.
People with abilities are called Beyonders, and they get those abilities by drinking potions tied to numbered rungs on what the book calls Pathways. Climb high enough, and the climb starts to reshape the climber. That tension, between wanting power and staying yourself, is the engine of the whole series.
The book is enormous, and it pays off slowly. The animated show's first season covers only the opening volume, chapters 1 through 213, and there is a great deal of book left after that. Readers describe a story that respects their attention, where a small object or a throwaway line comes roaring back hundreds of chapters later.
The tarot-card trick
The most charming thing in the book is a con. Klein discovers he can pull people into a gray mist, a private meeting space where he appears not as a nervous student but as a mysterious higher being seated above them. He names the gathering the Tarot Club and hands out seats named after tarot cards.
The joke that carries the story is that everyone at the table thinks they are talking to a god, and the god is just a guy bluffing his way through, terrified of being found out. It is funny and tense at once, and it gives the book a warmth that pure cosmic dread never could.
The club fills with a strange cross-section of strangers, all convinced they have been chosen. None of them realize they are being bluffed by a man still learning the rules of the world he landed in. The book mines that gap for comedy and for dread in equal measure.
Why it stuck
Lord of Mysteries was serialized on Qidian from April 2018 to May 2020 under the pen name Cuttlefish That Loves Diving. It sat at No. 1 on Qidian's charts for months, gathered tens of millions of readers, and became one of 144 web novels held in the National Library of China. That last fact is quietly extraordinary: a free serialized story shelved beside a nation's permanent record.
Part of the charm is the name on the cover. Cuttlefish That Loves Diving is a gently absurd pen name, and it belongs to the author of one of the biggest web novels of the past decade. The gap between the silly name and the serious, careful book is, in its own way, the whole story.
The world kept spreading. A donghua, or animated series, premiered in 2025 with a first season called Clown, and it streams internationally. An English print edition began in 2025 through Yen Press. The game is the newest door, but the book is where the fog, the cults, and the worried fake god all come from. It holds up on its own.
