What the Lord of Mysteries Game Actually Is
A web novel about Victorian occultists just became the biggest game launch in Kuaishou's history. Here is what it is, who built it, and why a million people showed up in the first hour.
On August 21, 2026, a video game opened its doors in mainland China and a million people walked through them in the first hour. At its peak, about 700,000 were logged in at once. Those are the official launch numbers, the kind a studio dreams of and also dreads, because a crowd that size does not sit quietly.
The game is Lord of Mysteries, and if the name means nothing to you yet, you are exactly who this is for. Built in Unreal Engine 5 by SPARK NEXA, a studio under Kuaishou, the short-video giant that now wants a seat in games, it is a gothic, Victorian-flavored role-playing game. And it is not an original idea. It adapts one of the most beloved Chinese web novels of the past decade.

A book before it was a game
Lord of Mysteries began in 2018 as a serialized web novel on Qidian, the biggest platform for the format in China. The author, who writes under the pen name Cuttlefish That Loves Diving, published it from April 2018 to May 2020. The book is dark fantasy with Lovecraft in its veins, set in a world that feels like late Victorian England, all fog, gaslight and secret societies.
The hero, Zhou Mingrui, wakes up in the body of a dead man named Klein Moretti and stumbles into a hidden world of Beyonders, people who gain supernatural powers by drinking potions and climbing what the book calls Pathways. Klein eventually poses as a god and gathers a circle of strangers who believe they are receiving messages from a higher power. The books spent months at No. 1 on Qidian's charts, had tens of millions of readers by 2023, and sit in the National Library of China as one of 144 web novels the state decided were worth keeping.
A web novel being shelved in a national library is already a small, delightful surprise. That the author later came back to supervise the game's original story is the warmer one. Cuttlefish did not just license the world and walk away.
The story has been leaking outside China for a while. An animated version, called a donghua, premiered in the summer of 2025, and its first season, Clown, streams internationally on Crunchyroll. An English print edition of the novel started arriving in mid-2025 from Yen Press. That makes the game the newest and most expensive door into a world that has been building for years.
Kuaishou bet a small fortune on it
The company behind the game is Kuaishou, best known outside China for short video. The reported cost, including promotion, was more than 1.2 billion yuan. The team numbered more than 600 people and worked for about four years. The producer, Xu Jie, came from NetEase, where he ran a studio and produced Justice Online, the MMORPG this one is constantly measured against.
The anticipation was measurable long before launch. The debut trailer passed six million views on Bilibili. More than 2.1 million people pre-registered on TapTap, which made it the most pre-registered new MMO on that platform.
What you do once you are inside
Players pick a divine path, drink potions, and climb toward godhood while a foggy Victorian world opens around them: cities, castles, countryside, ancient ruins. The official pitch is to choose your divine path and ingest potions in the search for your true self. This is an MMO, so you do not climb alone.
The story is where the team went ambitious, because there are two of them. One is an original plot set two years after the novel ends. The other, called the Above the Gray Mist quest line, retells the actual novel from the beginning. On top of that sit rotating modes with names like Dark Side of the City, a late-night Rush Night, and a guild war called Battle of the Four Emperors.
The servers cracked
Demand broke the plan. During pre-launch character creation, so many people tried to claim a name that the system briefly went down. The team added two more servers and called them Abyss and Death, which is about as on-theme as a server name gets.
We are urgently expanding the pre-created character capacity, so please be prepared.
Chinese players had their own way of describing the crush. Snagging a good character ID, they joked, was harder than buying a train ticket during Spring Festival, the annual travel rush that moves hundreds of millions of people. Some reported waiting in queues up to ten hours, and a few started reselling desirable IDs.
The game shot to No. 1 on China's App Store free chart, on Bilibili's game popularity list, and on TapTap's popularity chart. The company's own statement called it Kuaishou's best launch ever, breaking all of its previous game records.
Not everyone is in love
The reception is honest and mixed. Ratings sit at 4.3 out of 5 on the App Store, 9.1 on Bilibili, and 7.8 on TapTap, where recent scores lean more critical. Fans praise the atmosphere, the class combinations and the sheer scale. Critics point at paths that do not match the books, a pay-to-win tilt with monthly cards and gacha pulls, and early crashes.
That last bit matters, because the game's most devoted audience came for the novel, and the novel is exact about its magic. When the game reshapes a class, the internet notices. The fact that a million people showed up anyway tells you how much love already existed for this world.
What is the Lord of Mysteries game, then? A very expensive, very popular, imperfect attempt to make a beloved book something you can walk around inside. A novel a national library decided to keep now has its own servers named Abyss and Death. That is the whole story, and it is a nice one.
