Aurelius is a Roman name that means golden

Sean Ono Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl named their son Aurelius. The name is ancient, uncommon, and quietly radiant once you know where it comes from.

Aurelius is not a name you hear at the school gate every morning. It is old, and it is loaded with a specific, sunny meaning. In Latin, it comes from aureus, the word for golden or gilded.

So Sean Ono Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl gave their first son a name that literally means golden. The couple has not publicly explained why they chose it, and they may never. The name still has a story worth knowing entirely on its own.

The emperor behind the name

The most famous Aurelius was Marcus Aurelius, a Roman emperor who ruled from 161 to 180 CE. He is remembered less for battles than for a book he never meant to publish. Meditations was his private notebook, written in Greek, addressed only to himself.

He was born in 121 CE and died in 180, and he spent his last years not in a palace but on campaign in the north, writing to himself at night. The Stoic idea at the heart of those notes was blunt: only virtue is good, only vice is bad, and almost everything else is indifferent to happiness. It sounds severe. Read slowly, it is really a manual for letting go.

The original title translates roughly to "to himself." A later editor gave the work the grander name we know today. For nearly two thousand years, people have been reading one man's private reminder to stay calm, do his duty, and not let small things ruin him. That is an oddly perfect book for new parents running on no sleep.

Why the name fits this family

Golden is a warm word to hang on a firstborn, and this family has a history of names with texture. Sean and Charlotte's band was named The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, taken from a story Charlotte wrote when she was seven. They have never been the kind of people to reach for a name off the most-popular list.

Golden is also not a small thing to be called. It turns up in the names we give the best stretches of a life, the years we remember, the light at the end of a long day. A firstborn named golden carries a hope that needs no translation.

Aurelius also has quiet siblings. Aurelia is the feminine form, Aurelian was a later emperor, and the name was carried by several early saints. It has never been common in a modern English-speaking classroom, which is part of its appeal. If the couple wanted something ancient, uncommon, and quietly golden, they found it.

What we do not know

One honest caveat: the couple has not said publicly why they chose Aurelius. It could be the Stoic philosopher, the golden meaning, a family connection, or none of the above. What is verifiable is the name itself, which is the part a curious reader can actually keep. And that part is settled: it is old, it is Roman, and it means golden.

A child named golden, born to two musicians who have spent nineteen years making strange and warm things together, was announced to the world with a joke about a "Human Bean." The name fits the family even if nobody ever explains it. Some things do not need an explanation to be exactly right. A golden name, a long partnership, a first grandchild. That is a lot of light for one small announcement.
