Sean Ono Lennon vs. Julian Lennon: Two Brothers, Two Careers
Sean Ono Lennon just became a father. Meet John Lennon's two sons, who carried the same famous surname down two very different roads.
On the evening of September 1, 2026, Sean Ono Lennon posted a note that would have looked ordinary in almost any other family. He and his longtime partner, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, had a baby boy. The name they chose was Aurelius.
Nothing about the way Sean announced it felt like a managed celebrity rollout. That is the point, and it is also the key to understanding who he is.
Okay so... Charlotte and I would like to announce that we have indeed created a Human Bean! His name is, Aurelius! Thank you!
The baby matters well beyond one announcement. Aurelius is the first grandchild of John Lennon. Sean is the younger of John's two sons, and his older half-brother Julian has said for years that he did not want children of his own. So a name nobody saw coming now carries the next generation of one of the most famous families in music.
Who Sean Ono Lennon is
Sean Taro Ono Lennon was born in New York City on October 9, 1975. The date was not a coincidence. It was his father's 35th birthday. Sean was John Lennon's only child with Yoko Ono, and Elton John is his godfather. From day one, his life sat inside music, family, and a very public spotlight.
John Lennon was killed in December 1980, when Sean was five. That is a hard fact, and it belongs here only because it shaped everything that came after. Sean grew up mostly out of view, raised by a mother who was an artist in her own right. He went on to make music without ever chasing the size of his father's fame.
His catalog is longer and stranger than most people realize. Solo albums arrived first: Into the Sun in 1998, Friendly Fire in 2006, Asterisms in 2024. In between, he played in the band Cibo Matto, formed the Claypool Lennon Delirium with Les Claypool, and produced records for Yoko Ono and Lana Del Rey. A whole career has been built on being a collaborator rather than a leading man.
The steadiest thread in all of it has been Charlotte Kemp Muhl. The two formed a two-person band called The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, recorded albums in their Greenwich Village home studio, and ran their own label, Chimera Music. For them, work and home have occupied the same room for nearly twenty years.
The other Lennon son
Julian Lennon was born first, on April 8, 1963, in Liverpool. His mother was Cynthia Powell, John's first wife. The two brothers grew up in different households, on different continents, and only partly in each other's orbit. The surname is the same. Almost everything else about their roads through music is different.
Julian took the conventional route and hit early. His 1984 debut album, Valotte, produced two top-ten singles, "Valotte" and "Too Late for Goodbyes," and earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Then he stepped sideways. He became a photographer, a documentary producer, and the author of a bestselling children's book trilogy about caring for the Earth. He has never married and has no children.
Sean took the stranger route from the start. He kept his mother's surname, Ono, in the middle of his own, and drifted toward experimental and indie music rather than radio. The two men are close, by all accounts. Julian watched Sean play live in Paris in 2006 and has described staying in touch through the years since.
One surname, two answers
Put the brothers side by side and you get two different responses to the same heavy inheritance. Julian spent a stretch chasing pop success, then built a quieter life in pictures and books. Sean built a long career in the cracks between genres, well known but never quite a household name. Neither one became his father, and both seem at peace with that.
There is a sweetness in how the news landed. Julian reportedly shared the baby's arrival first, in a post he later deleted, congratulating his brother and calling himself an uncle. Sean's own announcement, with its "Human Bean" joke, read like relief and delight in equal measure. The family's private moment briefly went public, and it stayed warm.
If you came here because of the baby, the takeaway is plain. The man holding the newborn is John's quieter son, a career collaborator who never needed to headline a stadium. His brother is the one who had a pop hit at twenty-one and then walked away from the spotlight on his own terms. Both answers to the surname are real.
What Aurelius changes
The Lennon family, at a glance
- Sean Ono Lennon
- Born October 9, 1975. John and Yoko's son, a musician, and now a father.
- Julian Lennon
- Born April 8, 1963. John's son with Cynthia Powell, a musician and photographer with no children.
- Aurelius
- Born in late August 2026. John Lennon's first grandchild.
- Charlotte Kemp Muhl
- Sean's partner since 2007, a musician and model.
The name Aurelius deserves its own small pause. It is a Roman name that means golden, and its most famous bearer was the philosopher-emperor Marcus Aurelius. Whether the couple chose it for that reason, they have not said. What is clear is that a family famous for names has just added a good one.
Sean was born on his father's birthday. Now he has a child of his own, and the dates do not line up the same way. What lines up is the gentler thing: a boy who grew up carrying a heavy name is now, at fifty, a father himself.
