Vila Belmiro Field Guide: More Than a Stadium Name

Vila Belmiro is a neighborhood name, an official stadium name's everyday rival, and a living piece of Santos history. Here is the useful map, including what is known about its proposed future.

Some stadium names are really geography wearing a football scarf. I like Vila Belmiro for exactly that reason. Supporters use it for Santos' home, even though the formal name is Estádio Urbano Caldeira, and the two names tell different parts of the same story.

Santos-Cruzeiro on September 12, 2026 brought the name back into search results, but a kickoff time is the least durable thing about it. We checked the club's own history, city material and the stadium's visitor information to make a small field guide for anyone who wants to know what the name means, why it persists and what is actually confirmed about the ground's future.

The name on the map

Official name
Estádio Urbano Caldeira, named in 1933 after Urbano Caldeira.
Everyday name
Vila Belmiro, after the neighborhood where Santos built its sports ground.
Opening
Santos says its Praça de Esportes opened on October 12, 1916.
A useful caution
A city-approved replacement-arena project is a proposal and licensing process, not proof that the present stadium has already disappeared.

The official name came after the nickname

Santos' history page says the club inaugurated its new Praça de Esportes in the Vila Belmiro neighborhood on October 12, 1916. At first it was simply the club's field or sports ground. After Urbano Caldeira died, the club officially adopted his name in 1933. The neighborhood name had already done the everyday work, though, and it stayed.

That is why both labels are correct but not interchangeable in tone. Estádio Urbano Caldeira is the formal name you may see in official documents. Vila Belmiro is the familiar shorthand that makes the stadium sound inseparable from its setting. The club also records the nickname Alçapão da Vila, or the village trapdoor, coined by journalist Antonio Guenaga in 1930 after Santos went unbeaten in 25 home matches that year. I cannot think of a more footballish nickname: slightly theatrical, entirely local and built around a run of results.

A working stadium has a memory room inside it

The most delightful detail is not a statue or a capacity figure. Inside the stadium, Santos runs the Memorial das Conquistas. The club says the 380-square-meter memorial opened on November 17, 2003 and has welcomed more than a million visitors. Its museum visit includes a panoramic look at the pitch through a glass door. The fuller tour includes places such as the press room, dressing room, tunnel, sidelines and bench.

That arrangement makes Vila Belmiro more than a backdrop for old highlights. Trophies, photographs and a current match ground share a wall there. The club's visitor page gives an honest piece of practical texture too: the stadium tour does not run on match days, and museum hours can change around them. I appreciate that boundary. A stadium is not a museum pretending to be alive. It lives first.

The old ground has a digital doorway

Santos launched a 3D virtual tour in 2022 so people anywhere could explore principal areas of the stadium remotely. For a reader who arrives through a search result far from the coast, that is a nice second doorway: the place can be approached as history, architecture and club culture before it becomes a travel plan. The virtual tour does not replace the ground. It gives the ground a second doorway.

The city remains part of the story, not just the address line. A Santos municipal history feature calls the 1916 venue one of the city's emblematic football stages. That connection explains why the familiar neighborhood name has more sticking power than a formal plaque. We tend to keep saying the names that carry a whole local picture.

What is confirmed about the proposed new arena

There is a future-arena story, but it needs careful grammar. The city announced that the project for a new multi-use Santos arena at the Vila Belmiro site had been approved, in an article updated on May 5, 2026. That same municipal page says the parties then had up to a year to request the construction license and describes an estimated construction period after work begins.

So approval is not completion, and an estimate is not an opening date. I found no confirmed public opening date on the city page. The better answer, for now, is that a replacement is authorized as a project while the existing Estádio Urbano Caldeira remains the Santos home named in current club match information. That distinction saves readers from treating an appealing rendering as a finished building.

A simple way to keep the names straight

  • Use Vila Belmiro when you mean the familiar stadium-and-neighborhood identity.
  • Use Estádio Urbano Caldeira when the formal name matters, especially in a historical or official context.
  • Remember that the 1916 date marks the sports ground's opening, while the current formal name came later.
  • Treat the new arena as a proposed, approved project until a source confirms construction milestones or an opening date.

Vila Belmiro survives a quick match search because it is not only a stadium label. The name holds a neighborhood, a formal memorial to a club figure, a 1916 ground and a room where a glass door looks out at the grass. That is a generous amount of life for two words to carry.
