Meet William Crockett, the New Oil Titan in Landman Season 3

William Crockett is the newly announced Michael Kelly character in Landman Season 3. Paramount has given us a job title and a formidable description - not a plot, a backstory or a rival list.

A sunny low-table still life with two plain film canisters, a small oil derrick paperweight, a purple briefcase and a blue dot on a cream background.

The first official description of William Crockett contains an admirably direct hint of his scale: he leads the largest oil management firm in the world. I like that Paramount did not introduce this new Landman character with a fog machine and three paragraphs of vague menace. The September 9 casting release gives him a name, a job and a sharply tailored phrase: Crockett is a titan of industry whose whole presence suggests efficiency and money.

Michael Kelly will play Crockett as a Season 3 series regular. That much is confirmed. The rest of the sensible answer is restraint. Paramount has not named Crockett's company, explained his history, or said whether he will help, challenge or simply complicate Tommy Norris's next chapter. A very large business title can be enjoyable without turning guesses into character facts.

The Paramount Press Express release is the source to keep at the center. It calls Kelly a series regular, names Crockett and supplies that management-firm description. Paramount+'s own Season 3 guide repeats the same essentials and identifies Kelly as the first new Season 3 cast addition announced to date. That is a compact official record, and compact is a virtue here.

Why this description is more interesting than a cast list

Landman already deals in different scales of oil business, from the field-level work in its West Texas setting to people making decisions in offices. A character described as the leader of the largest management firm arrives at the high end of that ladder. TV Insider's current Season 3 page places the announcement beside the Season 2 ending, where Tommy begins a new family-operated company. I think that contrast is genuinely promising as story architecture, even though it does not prove a particular Crockett plotline.

It is tempting to turn two business descriptions into an instant rivalry. Do not. A firm leader can be a competitor, a buyer, a pressure point, an occasional ally or a person whose interests run somewhere the audience has not seen yet. The official announcement does not choose among those possibilities. Calling that blank space blank is more fun than it sounds, because it leaves the season room to surprise an audience honestly.

What Michael Kelly brings, without borrowing another role's plot

Kelly is not new to Taylor Sheridan's Paramount+ orbit. The studio notes that he currently appears in Lioness, and it lists The Penguin, Jack Ryan and House of Cards among his recent or notable television credits. Forbes' September 10 report also notes the move from Lioness to Landman. Those credits explain why viewers may recognize him. They do not explain William Crockett. I will not pretend that a prior character's mannerisms are a spoiler for a new one.

That boundary matters because casting shorthand can get silly very quickly. Treating a person from one show as a fixed type in another is a shortcut, not evidence. The durable fact is better: Paramount selected an actor with a substantial screen résumé for a regular role whose official description emphasizes corporate reach. Everything beyond that is still waiting for the episodes.

A good way to read the announcement

  • Keep the name and actor together: William Crockett is Michael Kelly's announced Season 3 role.
  • Treat the management-firm description as confirmed character setup, not as a summary of the coming plot.
  • Separate a credible inference from a confirmation. The smaller-company and larger-company contrast is visible; a feud is not.
  • Wait for Paramount material or the episodes themselves before attaching relationships, motives or outcomes to Crockett.

Parade's cast guide also repeats the official Crockett description while giving the broader show's oil-world setting. The repetition across coverage is useful chiefly because it shows how little extra story information has been released. I checked rather than filling that gap with a theory. At this stage, largest, efficiency and money are the whole public character file.

That is enough for a first introduction. William Crockett is not yet someone a viewer can diagnose from a trailer frame or rank against Tommy. He is a newly confirmed figure at the very top of the business pyramid, played by Michael Kelly. For now, that spare description is its own small pleasure: in a show full of complicated arrangements, one new character arrives with an exceptionally clear business card.
