Kristen Bell's Daughters Don't Love How She Dresses, but She Wears It Anyway

Lincoln and Delta are old enough to have opinions, and their mother's closet is the main target. She takes the notes and keeps the dress.

Kristen Bell's daughters are old enough now to have opinions, and they are not shy about the one they hold about her closet. Lincoln is 13 and Delta is 11, and when their mother asks for a fashion verdict, the answer is usually a shrug. I find the whole dynamic quietly wonderful, because it is the most normal thing a famous family has admitted to in a while.

Bell said it herself, plainly, in a recent interview: "For the most part, I don't think they love the way that I dress if I'm being brutally honest." The girls do occasionally borrow from her, but approval is scarce. "Every now and again, I will find something removed from my closet, like a shirt I love or a belt," she said. Compliments are rarer still. As she put it, they are never standing there saying, "Great fit, Mom."

The Closet Goes Both Ways

The sharing flows in a direction that makes the story warm rather than petty. While the girls roll their eyes at her style, they happily split haircare products with her, and the pimple patches live in their bedroom. The family is not fighting over fashion. They are negotiating who gets the good shampoo, which is about as wholesome as a celebrity household gets. A shared beauty shelf, it turns out, outranks a shared closet in this house.

The Red Dress That Was Too Much

There is a perfect earlier example of where Bell draws the line. When she walked out in a red satin wrap dress with a plunging neckline for a Nobody Wants This premiere, her daughters were unimpressed. They called it "too sexy" and told her she could not leave the house in it. Bell's answer, by her own account, was simple: "Too bad. I'm going to." She wore the dress.

The reason this story keeps resurfacing is not the dresses. It is what the exchange says about the two people involved. Bell is not asking her children for permission, and she is not chasing their approval, but she clearly listens to them and enjoys them. The girls feel safe enough to be blunt with a mother who could buy any opinion she wanted. That is, to me, a sign of a healthy family rather than a stylist problem. A kid only teases a parent they trust, and a parent only keeps dressing like herself when the teasing is warm rather than cutting.

Why It Lands

What I like best is the honesty underneath it. A lot of celebrity parenting reads as polished and scripted. This does not. A thirteen-year-old who tells her mother a dress is "too much of a paradox for me" is a kid with a sense of humor and a mother who laughs instead of flinching. Bell kept the dress and the joke.

Dax Shepard is in on the joke too, by all accounts. He has said that watching Lincoln perform in musical theater moves him to tears, and both parents clearly enjoy the company of the two kids they have spent years keeping out of the spotlight. The fashion verdict is not a crack in the family, then. It is part of the same easy back-and-forth that keeps the whole household running. Lincoln's thirteenth birthday in March, which Bell marked with a tribute video, sits on the same warm scale as the red-dress argument.

Bell has been open about the harder parts of parenting too, and about keeping her daughters mostly off social media. But the fashion verdict is the detail that sticks because it is funny and forgiving at once. She wears what she loves, her kids tell her the truth, and nobody has to win. We could all use a household where the biggest style review is a thirteen-year-old calling a red dress "too sexy" while borrowing your shampoo.
