A Practical Guide to Final Fantasy VII Revelation's 200GB Storage Demand

The director's own estimate puts Revelation's install size around 200GB, nearly double Rebirth's. Here is where that number comes from, how solid it is, and what to actually do about your drive space before April 2027.

About 81 gigabytes for the first one. About 146 for the second. Now, if the director's current estimate holds, something close to 200. That is the growth curve of the Final Fantasy VII remake project's install size across three games, so I want to walk through where that pattern comes from before Revelation actually arrives.

The number, and how solid it actually is

Director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the figure with Video Games Chronicle during Tokyo Game Show, which ran September 17 through 21, 2026 in Chiba. He framed it as an estimate rather than a promise, which matters.

It's probably going to be around 200GB of game.

I'd treat 200 gigabytes as a working number rather than the figure that ends up printed on a retail listing. PC Gamer's write-up of the same comments frames Hamaguchi's reasoning simply: the team is choosing scope and visual fidelity first, and letting install size land wherever that lands, rather than designing backward from a target file size.

Why the trilogy keeps getting heavier

Some of this is just what an open world costs. Revelation adds full airship flight, underwater submarine traversal and noticeably larger explorable regions than Rebirth's already sprawling map, layered on top of the motion capture, voice work and cutscene density the series has carried since Remake. Push Square's coverage of the DLC announcement notes two paid story expansions are also coming after launch, which will add to the total footprint over time even though they install separately.

The upside of shipping this heavy

There is a reason Square Enix isn't shying away from a number this large, beyond raw ambition. Hamaguchi told VGC that leaning on a full download rather than disc-locked content buys the team real flexibility right up to launch day.

For a download-only version, you can literally fix the game up until the day of release, so if there's a huge issue, you can fix it before release.

That is a trade a lot of players will quietly appreciate. Fewer day-one bugs get baked permanently onto a disc, in exchange for a heavier initial download and, eventually, a bigger slice of your drive handed over to one game.

Physical copies do not actually skip the download

Here is the detail that made me laugh a little. Buying the disc will not spare you the wait: every physical version of Revelation requires an additional download on every platform, because Square Enix chose not to compress or cut content to fit what a disc can hold. So whether you preorder a case for the shelf or buy digitally from the couch, you end up in the same download queue either way.

What this actually means for your setup

  • Check how much free space your PS5, Xbox or PC drive has now, and plan to clear roughly 200GB, since that is Hamaguchi's current working figure.
  • Remember the number can still move. Development was ongoing as of the Tokyo Game Show interviews in September 2026.
  • A physical copy still requires a day-one download, so budget the same time and drive space either way.
  • For comparison, Remake's Intergrade version needed about 81GB and Rebirth needed about 146GB on PS5, so this is a real jump, not a rounding error.

None of this reads like a scandal to me so much as a bill finally coming due. A trilogy that opened by rebuilding a single Midgar sector in absurd detail was always going to land somewhere large once it opened onto the rest of the planet. Rebirth already warned everyone this was coming, jumping from Remake's roughly 81GB to about 146GB in a single sequel. Two hundred is just the next rung on a ladder this project has been climbing since 2020. Clear the shelf space, or the drive space, and let the number do the job it is there to do.
