Revelation vs. Rebirth: How Much Bigger Final Fantasy VII's World Just Got

Midgar's corridors, Rebirth's open regions, and now an airship you can jump out of. A side-by-side look at how the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy's scope grew across three games.

Three blank disc-shaped objects of increasing size arranged in a row, with the largest one circled by a tiny airship instead of sitting still like the others.
Same story, three very different sizes. Illustration: Joyful Take.

In 2020, you could not leave Midgar. In the hands-on build shown this fall, you can climb into an airship, jump out over open jungle, and choose whether to photograph what's living in the canopy below or fight it. That gap says more about how the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy grew than any marketing line could, so I want to lay the three games side by side and look at the actual shape of that growth.

Remake: one city, mostly on rails

Final Fantasy VII Remake launched on PlayStation 4 in April 2020 and covered only Midgar, the industrial city that opens the original 1997 game. The developers later said the opening stretch alone held too much essential story to compress into a single release. So they expanded it into its own game instead. Structurally, that meant a mostly linear path from district to district. Critics at the time called it effective. They also called it noticeably corridor-shaped next to a traditional open RPG.

Rebirth: open regions, still on solid ground

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth arrived on PS5 in February 2024 and finally let the party out of the city. Chocobos carried them across Junon, Costa del Sol, Corel, Gold Saucer, Gongaga, Cosmo Canyon and Nibelheim. Each region behaved like its own open playground. Traversal still stayed on the ground, though, with chocobos and a buggy doing the work a car or a bike would do elsewhere. One place was deliberately withheld: Wutai, saved on purpose for the third game, the developers said at the time.

Revelation: an open world, plus a reason to look up

The gameplay shown at gamescom 2026 in Cologne pushes the format further again. The Highwind airship is fully controllable now, not just a fast-travel menu with wings. Players can fly over the map and parachute down into it, and a submarine adds underwater traversal on top of that. A hands-on account from the show describes a jungle region built around real verticality, with canopy layers and elevated platforms. Exploration reads closer to three dimensions than anything Rebirth's regions attempted. Wutai and Rocket Town, both absent from Rebirth, are confirmed to finally show up. And Video Games Chronicle's interview with director Naoki Hamaguchi puts the game's current install size at roughly 200GB, itself a sign of how much the scope has grown.

Here is how that growth looks in numbers we can actually verify, side by side.

Figures for Remake and Rebirth are confirmed release-day sizes; the Revelation figure is director Naoki Hamaguchi's pre-launch estimate.

What stays the same underneath all that growth

For all the added scale, the underlying promise has not changed, and that is the part I find genuinely reassuring. Each game still tells its slice of the same 1997 story, aiming the same handful of characters toward the same ending at the Northern Crater. Remake never pretended to be the whole story, and neither did Rebirth. Revelation is simply the game that finally gets to finish it, on a much bigger map. Nintendo Wire's reporting on Revelation's two planned story expansions suggests that pattern continues even after the credits, with paid Sephiroth and Vincent chapters arriving between winter 2027 and spring 2028 as optional extensions rather than a required fourth act.

I think the more interesting comparison isn't file size at all, though. It's ambition. A team that spent 2020 convincing players a single train station and a stretch of slums could carry a whole game has spent six years since teaching itself something bigger. It learned to build a sky, a jungle canopy and an ocean floor. It learned to trust players to go find their own way through all of it. That's a bigger jump than any gigabyte count can show.
