A Field Guide to Twitch Chat Badges and What Each Icon Means

Three slots, 18 pixels, and a surprising amount of etiquette. Here is what each Twitch badge says about the person wearing it.

A Twitch badge is allowed 18 pixels. Streamers who upload their own subscriber badges must supply it at 18, 36 and 72 pixels square, as a transparent PNG no bigger than 25 kilobytes, and if they never bother, the default is a plain star. Everything a badge says about someone has to survive being that small. I went through Twitch's own badge documentation to sort the icons into the groups Twitch itself uses, because once you know the groups, a busy chat stops looking like a wall of confetti.

Why nobody wears ten badges at once

Twitch's How to Use Badges page sets the ceiling: three badges at a time, or four if you win a prediction badge. Each badge sits in a slot, and badges of the same slot override each other. Left to right, the order runs like this.

  • Prediction badge, when you have one
  • Global authority, meaning Twitch Staff
  • Channel authority, meaning the broadcaster or a moderator
  • Subscriber badge for the channel you are in
  • Global vanity badges such as Prime, Turbo or an event badge

You pick which ones show from the Chat Identity button beside the chat box. You can even set a custom badge for one channel that overrides your global choice there.

Badges that tell you who is in charge

The Twitch Chat Badges Guide lists the authority icons plainly. The broadcaster owns the channel. A moderator, chosen by the broadcaster, can time people out, ban them, and switch on slow or subscriber-only mode. A lead moderator can do all that and also manage the mod team and VIP list. VIPs are loyal regulars; they are immune to chat settings like slow mode, but a moderator can still act on them directly. Staff badges belong only to Twitch employees and "cannot be granted to community members."

Badges that tell you who has chipped in

Two quiet details are worth knowing. Tier 2 and Tier 3 subscribers can carry a small flair over their sub badge if the streamer turns it on. And a Founders badge never really leaves: let your sub lapse and it hides, but it returns when you resubscribe, unless the streamer revokes it.

Badges that tell you what someone is doing

A few icons are less about status and more about manners. The Artist badge marks the person who drew a channel's emotes or overlays. Chat Bot flags an approved bot so nobody argues with it. And there are two badges anyone can wear: Watching without Video and Watching without Audio. The second exists for anyone "watching streams with limited or no audio." It is my favourite icon on the list, because it answers a question before anybody asks it. If someone misses the joke that just landed on stream, the little badge tells chat why, kindly.

Event badges, the ones that escape

Event badges are global, but you can only earn them during an event. The examples Twitch lists run from TwitchCon 2017 to an r/place 2023 Cake badge, plus a 2026 Mod Club Founder's badge that closed to new members on June 8, 2026. Twitch warns that event badges can take up to 72 hours to appear, and that "When event badges are gone, they're gone, and can't be reissued."

The newest members of this family are the Pokémon badges, which Twitch launched on August 24, 2026 with a free Pichu and three Kanto starters. They follow their own watch-over-three-days rules, which our companion explainer walks through step by step. Tbreak's summary adds a helpful note that a separate Collections view tracks what you have earned.

How to read a badge you do not recognise

Click it. Twitch opens a larger version with a short description of what it is. That single habit decodes almost everything above, including badges invented after this page was written. For the rest, the Chat Identity panel shows which badges you own and lets you swap them in and out, so you can decide how much of your 18-pixel biography the room gets to read.
