Twitch Gift Subs vs. Regular Subs: Who Pays, What Renews

For the streamer a gift and a sub are nearly the same thing. For the viewer, renewals, streaks and the Founders badge work very differently.

Twitch's help page for people who receive a gift sub opens with "Look who got a gift subscription, lucky you!", which is a warmer line than most billing documentation ever manages. I lined up Twitch's articles on gifting, streaks and Founders badges side by side to answer the question people ask before they tap subscribe. The short answer surprised me: for the streamer the two look almost identical, and nearly every difference lands on the viewer.

For the streamer, a gift counts like a sub

Twitch's creator page is blunt about it: "A gift sub supports your channel just like a regular recurring subscription." The recipient gets the same emotes and perks as any subscriber, right away. The money is also final. According to Twitch's recipient guide, revenue from a gift is added to the creator's balance at purchase, so a recipient who switches off the benefits does not trigger a refund. The support still reaches the streamer.

What I did not find in these help pages is a single public revenue-share figure for a sub, gifted or not. Splits depend on the creator's program, so we are not going to guess one here.

What the person on the receiving end actually gets

A gift lasts 30 days unless the gifter bought a multi-month pack. The recipient can continue it as a paid sub at any point, and the charge only starts when the gift runs out. Twitch's own example stresses there is "no risk to your sub streak" in the handover. Gifted months also count toward tenure. Someone who would rather not receive gifts from channels they do not follow can switch that off in privacy settings. Blocking a user or channel works too.

One fine-print wrinkle: a Founders badge goes to Prime or paid subscribers, and Twitch defines a paid sub as "any non-gifted Tier or length of subscription." A recipient who continues a gifted sub with sub tokens is also ineligible. If a new channel's Founders slots matter to you, subscribe with your own money.

Streaks, where a gift can quietly save the day

A lapsed subscriber has a seven-day grace period before their streak breaks. It was 30 days until a 2019 change. Receive a gift sub inside that week and the streak survives, as long as the sub continues after the gift. That makes a well-timed gift one of the kindest small things you can do in a chat.

Community gifts and the troll filter

Typing /gift plus a number from 1 to 100 sends subs to a channel's community rather than a named viewer. Twitch's gifting guide says the picking algorithm starts with eligible viewers in chat, then followers and mods, and adds, with admirable candour, "Our algorithm also avoids giving trolls subs." Gifts sent with the /gift command cannot be anonymous, although the support panel offers an anonymous checkbox. Community gifts also cannot be multi-month.

Gifts also count toward the Pokémon badge offer, which Twitch announced on August 24, 2026 and outlets such as Absolute Geeks summarised: a new gift earns the gifter a Special Poké Ball just as a new sub would.

Which one I would pick

If you want the loyalty badge, the streak and a shot at Founders, subscribe yourself. A gift cannot give you those. If you already subscribe and want to widen the circle, gift. Your Prime sub cannot be gifted, so that decision makes itself. Either way the streamer is supported the same, and somebody in chat gets told they are lucky.
