Inside Florida's 1,000-yard club, where no Gator has repeated
Eleven seasons, ten running backs, and not one pair of consecutive 1,000-yard years. The reasons are an injury, a draft rule, a father and son, and a lot of timing.
Emmitt Smith finished the 1988 season with 988 rushing yards. Twelve short. That tiny gap is the reason I went back through Florida's record lists this week, because it sits at the center of an odd fact: The Gainesville Sun reported on September 1, 2026 that no Florida running back has ever rushed for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons.
That is surprising for a school that has sent Smith, Fred Taylor and Neal Anderson to the NFL. It is also the chase Jadan Baugh is on in 2026, after his 1,170-yard season in 2025.
Every 1,000-yard season in Florida history
| Season | Player | Rushing yards |
|---|---|---|
| 1975 | Jimmy DuBose | 1,307 |
| 1985 | Neal Anderson | 1,034 |
| 1987 | Emmitt Smith | 1,341 |
| 1989 | Emmitt Smith | 1,599 |
| 1991 | Errict Rhett | 1,109 |
| 1993 | Errict Rhett | 1,289 |
| 1997 | Fred Taylor | 1,292 |
| 2002 | Earnest Graham | 1,085 |
| 2004 | Ciatrick Fason | 1,267 |
| 2012 | Mike Gillislee | 1,152 |
| 2015 | Kelvin Taylor | 1,035 |
| 2025 | Jadan Baugh | 1,170 |
Read it top to bottom and the gaps jump out. Jimmy DuBose opened the club in 1975 and then had it to himself for a decade. Emmitt Smith's 1,599 in 1989 is still the single-season record, 37 years later. And between Kelvin Taylor in 2015 and Baugh in 2025, Florida went nine straight seasons without anyone reaching four figures at all.
A small housekeeping note, because lists disagree. Saturday Down South's version leaves out Anderson and describes Smith as having back-to-back seasons, even though his came in 1987 and 1989. We went with Anderson included, based on 247Sports' profile of his final two seasons, and with the Sun's plainer reading of the calendar.
Three near misses and one early exit
Smith is the famous one. His Wikipedia biography records 1,341 yards as a freshman in 1987, then a sprained knee against Memphis State in mid-October 1988 that cost him about a month. He came back, still reached 988, and then ran for a school-record 1,599 in 1989. With Steve Spurrier arriving and a pass-first offense on the way, he left after his junior year for the 1990 draft, the first year juniors were eligible. So his best chance at a streak died on a knee, and his second chance never existed.
Errict Rhett has the other pair, 1991 and 1993, with a 1992 season that fell below the line. By the time he finished in 1993 he had broken Smith's career rushing record, with 4,163 yards. Everyone else in the club reached 1,000 exactly once. Anderson did it in his final year, and others ran out of time or chose the draft.
The father and son in the middle of the list
My favorite line in the table is 2015. Kelvin Taylor, Fred Taylor's son, ran for 1,035 yards as a junior, becoming the ninth 1,000-yard rusher in school history and then declaring for the NFL draft. Eighteen years after his father's big year, the family was in the club twice.
The coincidence goes further back. As a junior at Glades Day in Belle Glade in 2011, Kelvin broke the Florida high school career rushing record of 8,804 yards, ESPN reported. The man who had held it since 1986 was Emmitt Smith. There is something lovely about a Gator's son taking a record from the most famous Gator back of all, then joining him on the same Gainesville list.
What Baugh needs to be first
Through three games, Baugh had 458 yards, so he needs 542 more. Florida has nine regular-season games left on its schedule after September 19, which works out to about 60 yards a game. On paper that is modest for a back averaging 8.5 yards a carry. In practice, the list above is a record of how many things can go wrong: one sprain, one early draft decision, one quiet year. That is why I would call this a real chase and not a formality, even at his pace.
If he gets there, the table gets its first matched pair of consecutive years. If he does not, he joins the most talented group of almost-repeaters in the SEC. You can read the rest of his story in our profile of Jadan Baugh.
