Deal Breaker Opens the Myron Bolitar Books, but Netflix Starts With Drop Shot
Twelve novels, a spinoff for Win and a young-adult trilogy for Myron's nephew. Here is the order, and where a new reader should begin before the show arrives.
The prizes came early for Myron Bolitar. Each of the first three books in Harlan Coben's series won a major crime-fiction award: an Anthony for Deal Breaker, a Shamus for Drop Shot, an Edgar for Fade Away. Netflix's 2018 announcement of its deal with Coben called him the first author to win all three, and the Bolitar books supplied the whole set. I lined up the full run to answer the question readers keep typing now that Netflix is filming the character. Where do you start?
All twelve, in publication order
| # | Title | Year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Deal Breaker | 1995 |
| 2 | Drop Shot | 1996 |
| 3 | Fade Away | 1996 |
| 4 | Back Spin | 1997 |
| 5 | One False Move | 1998 |
| 6 | The Final Detail | 1999 |
| 7 | Darkest Fear | 2000 |
| 8 | Promise Me | 2006 |
| 9 | Long Lost | 2009 |
| 10 | Live Wire | 2011 |
| 11 | Home | 2016 |
| 12 | Think Twice | 2024 |
Look at the gaps. Seven books arrived in six years, then Coben stepped away for six, and the wait between Home and Think Twice ran eight. The characters age across those breaks, so reading in order pays off in a way it does not for a lot of detective series.
The changes are real, not cosmetic. Win is 31 in Deal Breaker and, by Wikipedia's reading of the recent books, somewhere in his mid to late forties. Esperanza Diaz begins as Myron's assistant and becomes his partner in the seventh novel, Darkest Fear, after earning her law degree at NYU. Read out of order and you meet a partner before you have watched her earn it, which is a small loss but a real one.
One later book also reaches across to Coben's young-adult shelf. Home, the eleventh novel, connects a character from the Mickey Bolitar books to Myron's circle, so if you plan to read both sets, it helps to finish Shelter before Home. The connection itself stays unspoiled here.
Why the show opens on book two
Coben told The Hollywood Reporter in July 2026 that the first season is based mainly on Drop Shot. "The mystery is from Drop Shot," he said, adding that the show is "going in other directions as well." The novel puts Myron at the U.S. Open, where a young player's death draws him into an older case at an exclusive club, and its tennis client is named Duane Richwood. Netflix's version has Jabari Banks as Dwayne Richmond, whom Deadline describes as a tennis prodigy and MB Sports' star client.
The names are close enough to notice. I could not find anyone at Netflix explaining the change, or explaining why the season skips Deal Breaker, so treat any theory as a guess. Mine is simple: a big, sunlit New York tournament is a fine stage for a first season.
Where to begin, if you ask me
Start with Deal Breaker. Win and Esperanza are both there from the first book, and their rhythm with Myron is the reason the series lasted three decades. So are the running jokes, including two grown men who are Batman fans and refer to their car as the Batmobile. Then comes a choice. Read Drop Shot now and you will know the spine of the season's case; wait, and you get the mystery fresh on screen, then the book as a second helping. Since Coben says the show will wander, neither route spoils everything.
If you only want a taste before the premiere, one book is enough. The shape of Myron's life is set on page one: the knee, the law degree, the agency, the friend you would not want to cross.
The side doors
Two spinoffs sit next to the main shelf. Win, published in 2021, hands the narration to Windsor Horne Lockwood III and fills in what drives him. Coben's young-adult trilogy follows Myron's nephew Mickey, beginning with Shelter in 2011 and continuing with Seconds Away and Found. Those books became a Prime Video series, Harlan Coben's Shelter, which What's on Netflix notes was canceled after one season in 2023. In 2022 Coben told Deadline that Mickey's screen rights sat with Amazon, so do not expect him in Netflix's show.
That leaves a pleasant bit of homework: twelve novels, one side trip with Win, and a season that begins on book two. Few TV shows arrive with that much reading already waiting.
