Inside Harlan Coben's Netflix Deal, Where American Thrillers Move Abroad

Most of Coben's books are set in the United States. Most of his Netflix shows are not. The reason starts with a travel agency and a deal built to cross borders.

Before he published a thriller, Harlan Coben's job was flying to other countries to set up trips for a family travel business. He mentioned it to Deadline in 2021, almost in passing, and I think it explains his Netflix shelf better than any contract clause. His books are mostly American. His shows mostly are not.

A deal built to travel

Netflix announced its overall deal with Coben on August 27, 2018. The plan covered 14 existing titles and future projects, to be made as English-language and foreign-language series and films, with Coben as executive producer on all of them. Deadline later described the pact as international from day one, routed through Netflix production hubs across Europe.

Coben's own explanation is commercial and cheerful at once. He had made TV in France for TF1, which caught Netflix's eye, and while making Safe with Netflix's international division the idea grew into a wider deal. Then came the line that settles the question:

They want to do a lot of international stuff and my books sell well overseas. I sell more internationally than I do in the USA.

Format mattered too. He told Deadline that old network television, with 22-episode seasons that open and close on a crime, would never have fit his kind of story. Streaming let one show run five episodes and another eight.

Count them and one country dominates. Six of the thirteen were made in Britain, three in Poland, and it took until June 2026 for the first Coben series set in America to reach the service. Caught, filmed in Patagonia, was his first adaptation from South America.

What changes when a story moves

Relocation is a rewrite, not a dub. Coben called the results hybrids, and his description of The Innocent is worth keeping:

You can still feel the Americanism, what I do, but they can also feel Spanish.

He was candid that he leans on local teams more for the foreign-language shows, and that after The Woods he would push next time for something slightly faster and more American. Local talent was part of the point. Mario Casas, whom Coben called about as big a star as Spain has, led The Innocent, and Coben said he and director Oriol Paulo were like brothers from their first meeting in New York. Paulo's name for the way Netflix matched them was "creative Tinder," and it is hard to picture a better description of an American author swiping right on a Spanish director.

There is a practical upside for viewers as well. Coben told Deadline that a series drops all its episodes in some 190 countries on the same day, and that he and his wife watched all eight episodes of The Innocent at home to check how the dubbing sounded. For a writer who sells more books abroad than at home, a Spanish or Polish original with dubbed versions is not a detour. It is the main road.

Why Myron stayed home

The one exception is deliberate. In 2022 Coben told Deadline that a story like The Stranger or Stay Close is easy to move abroad, while his series hero Myron Bolitar, whom readers revisit book after book, has to stay in the United States. That series is now filming in New York and New Jersey.

Wherever the camera goes, Coben tends to follow it. Den of Geek counted cameos in at least six adaptations, including a turn as a bartender at a video arcade in Fool Me Once. His Instagram review of his own performance: "You can't teach this kind of acting. You either have it or you don't."

The travel is not finished. What's on Netflix reports that The Woods, first made in Poland in 2020, has been shot again as a British series in Bolton and Manchester, with a release expected in 2027. Asked in 2021 what he would be if not a writer, Coben said a friend suggested a U.S. senator. His own answer was a duvet cover. We should all be glad he booked the other trip.
