Why Jeongyeon Left JYP and What Stays the Same
Jeongyeon has changed agencies for her individual work, not walked away from TWICE. Her own letter answers the biggest question and leaves one honest blank.
Part of the Screen, stage and celebrity collection.
The most consequential line in Jeongyeon's handwritten letter on August 10 was not the goodbye. It was her promise that TWICE would remain the center of her life and that appearing before ONCE as a member would stay her first priority. On the same date, Soompi reported that she had left JYP Entertainment and signed an exclusive contract with VARO Entertainment. VARO said it would support both her TWICE group activities and new work as an actress. One career has changed address. The group, in her telling, has not lost a member.
So why did Jeongyeon leave JYP? The careful answer is shorter than the speculation: she has not disclosed a detailed reason. Her letter describes a wish to begin a new chapter and take on new challenges, while expressing gratitude for the company where she spent her teenage years and built years of memories. It does not allege a dispute, name a contract problem or assign blame. Any tidier explanation would be somebody else's theory wearing her name tag.

- VARO Entertainment for individual activities
- Group status
- Jeongyeon says TWICE remains her first priority

Keep exploring
For the company itself, our VARO Entertainment guide explains the agency's management and production work from its own published materials.
The move was visible before it was final
The public timeline began to sharpen on June 24, 2026. VARO confirmed that it had met with Jeongyeon, but said then that nothing had been decided. JYP separately said TWICE was in a contract-renewal discussion period and that it was proceeding carefully while respecting the members' intentions. Those two statements appeared together in Soompi's June report, and Indonesia's national news agency ANTARA independently summarized the same responses.
That June wording matters. A meeting is not a signing, and at that point both agencies were explicitly cautious. August 10 supplied the missing confirmation. It did not retroactively turn every rumor from the intervening weeks into fact. The useful story is the documented progression: conversation, no decision, then Jeongyeon's own announcement.
Two lanes can belong to one career
VARO is chiefly an actor-management and production company. Its official company page says it was established on June 1, 2020, and supports artists across drama, film, advertising, magazines and performances while also producing original and digital content. That is a materially different center of gravity from a large music company. It also fits the next piece of Jeongyeon's public calendar: reports say she has been cast in New Recruit: The Movie, with Soompi describing it as her coming screen debut and reporting a nursing-officer role.
It is reasonable to see the acting focus as part of the appeal. It is not reasonable to upgrade that fit into a secret motive. VARO's August statement says it will support acting, and Jeongyeon's letter says she wants new challenges as Yoo Jeongyeon. Neither source publishes the negotiations, money, term length or division of scheduling authority behind the contract. Those details remain private.
Meanwhile, JYP's official TWICE profile still presents Jeongyeon among the group's nine members. A roster page is not a contract filing, but it is a useful check against a common bad shortcut: leaving the company for individual management does not, by itself, mean leaving TWICE. Her letter makes that boundary more clearly than any corporate page could.
A sister is already on the other side of the door
VARO already represents Jeongyeon's older sister, actor Gong Seung-yeon. The agency's official Gong profile lists a career spanning television, film and theater, including her 2025 stage role in The Secret of Flowers. The family connection was present in the very first reports about Jeongyeon's meeting, though no source says her sister negotiated the deal or chose the agency for her. The difference is small on paper and enormous in responsible reporting.
Still, the coincidence has warmth. On June 25, one day after the agency meeting became public, Harper's Bazaar Korea released the sisters' first joint pictorial since their respective debuts. Soompi's account describes playful moments that made the staff laugh. Their professional paths were already edging closer before the matching agency line appeared.
There is an even better detail from less polished surroundings. While Gong prepared for her first play, Jeongyeon recorded the other characters' lines so her sister could rehearse. According to SBS Star's March 5, 2025 interview, the funny script kept cracking Jeongyeon up, leaving giggles scattered through the practice audio. After the performance, she offered a note about breathing, then told Gong she had done well. That is not evidence about a contract. It is simply a lovely preview of what an actor-focused chapter can have nearby: a sister who will read every spare part, even if she cannot keep a straight face.
What fans should expect, and what they should not
The confirmed plan is broad, not granular. Jeongyeon intends to continue as a TWICE member while developing acting work under VARO. There is no public timetable for a solo acting slate beyond the reported film, no disclosed breakdown of which company controls which appearances, and no basis for promising a particular release date. Even the title and role details for New Recruit: The Movie come through entertainment reporting rather than a production page supplied by the film. They should be treated as reported, not carved into marble.
What can be said with confidence is more interesting anyway. Jeongyeon chose to announce the transition in her own handwriting. She thanked the place she was leaving, made room for a name and craft she wants to explore, and put the group at the center of the page rather than in a footnote. The graciousness does not tell us every reason. It does tell us her priority.
A company switch often gets flattened into a door slamming shut. This one sounds quieter: one door closing carefully, another opening, nine voices still expected in the chorus. For now, that is the accurate and genuinely hopeful shape of it.
