The Two Petra Parkers Hiding in Spider-Man Comics
The name was not invented by the internet. Marvel had already used it twice, for a teen hero and a singing princess. Here is the comic-book history behind the meme.
Part of the Fandom and screen collection.
Before the fan art, before the memes, before anyone on X typed the words, the name Petra Parker was already sitting in Marvel's files. Twice. The internet did not invent her. It found her, dusted her off, and decided she deserved a different story.
That is the detail that keeps surprising people about this whole trend. Petra is not a character dreamed up in August 2026. It is a name Marvel gave to two alternate-universe daughters of Peter Parker, in two very different corners of the Spider-Man multiverse.
Even the name was ready for the joke. Petra is simply the feminine of Peter, the same old Greek word for rock, so the gender flip was hiding in plain sight for years.

For the fan-made character who brought the name into a new conversation, read our Petra Parker explainer separates the art movement from the two comic-book namesakes.
Spider-Girl, the teen hero
The first Petra Parker showed up in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series. She serves as Peter Parker's counterpart from a world where everyone's gender got flipped, and she fights crime as Spider-Girl. In her universe the Green Goblin is a woman named Norma Osborn, and the Daily Bugle has a Joanna Jameson. She runs with the Web-Warriors, the cross-reality Spider squad. This is not a transition story. She answers a plain question: what if Peter Parker had been born a girl? The show treats it as barely a story point at all, which is its own kind of casual grace.
Spinstress, the singing princess
The second Petra is where the comics get genuinely strange, in the best way. In 2022, Marvel published Edge of Spider-Verse, and inside it a story called Once Upon A Spider: The Spinstress Princess. David Hein and Irene Sankoff wrote it. Luciano Vecchio drew it. It reimagines the Spider-hero as a full Disney-princess musical.
Princess Petra of Earth-423 is the daughter of Queen Mysteria. She sneaks out of the castle in a hooded disguise, gets her powers from a fairy gob-mother named Norma, and squares off against a villain called Bishop Octopus, a mashup of Doctor Octopus and Ursula the sea witch. Her love interest is a lute-playing minstrel named Merry James Watson. The story ends with Madame Web recruiting her for a multiverse war. It is as gloriously unhinged as it sounds.
The comic even shipped with real music. Its first song was recorded by Arielle Jacobs, the actress who played Princess Jasmine on Broadway, which is about as on-the-nose as a singing spider-princess can get.
Why make a Spider-Man story a princess musical at all? The writers leaned into the joke of it. A hero who swings on webs and a princess who bursts into song are not so far apart. Both are about a girl in a castle deciding she would rather be someone else, out there, in the city.
Neither one is trans, and that matters
Here is the part worth getting right. In the comics, neither Spider-Girl nor Spinstress is transgender. They are alternate-universe versions of Peter Parker who were simply born as girls. The transfemme Petra Parker who took over timelines in August 2026 is a fan reimagining, a third thing. She borrows the name and the look and asks a question the comics never did: what if it happened to the Peter we already know, the one who spent a lifetime hiding a secret?
That is why the fan version landed. It was not pulling from thin air. It reached for a name Marvel had left on the shelf and used it to tell a story the comics had danced around for years. The hidden identity, the second life, the dread of being found out. All of it was already on the page. Petra Parker just said the quiet part out loud.
So the next time someone says the internet made up Petra Parker, you can tell them the truth, which is better. Marvel made the name. The fans made it mean something. And a singing spider-princess got a second act, which she richly deserved.
