Who Is Petra Parker, the Trans Spider-Man of Fan Art

Marvel put the name Petra Parker on two different heroes. The internet borrowed it for a third, and fell for her hardest.

Part of the Fandom and screen collection.

The gag that launched a thousand redraws is very small. J. Jonah Jameson, the newspaper editor who has spent six decades calling Spider-Man a public menace, sits behind his desk looking mortified. He has just learned that the hero he spent his whole career denouncing transitioned. He is trying, with visible strain, to be decent about it.

By mid-August 2026 that single comic had become a full fan-art movement with a name: Petra Parker. Artists drew her by the hundreds. Cosplayers were summoned. It felt less like a meme than like a community deciding, all at once, that it wanted this character to exist.

The two Petra Parkers Marvel already had

Here is the part that surprises people who assume the internet invented her from scratch. Marvel already had a Petra Parker on the books. It had two.

The first showed up in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, which ran in the 2010s. As Spider-Girl, she is a female Peter Parker from a fully gender-swapped alternate universe. In her world the familiar names are all flipped: there is a Joanna Jameson, and the Green Goblin is a woman named Norma Osborn. She teams up with the Web-Warriors, the cross-reality squad of Spider-heroes. None of this is a transition story. It is simply Peter Parker, born a girl in a neighboring universe.

The second Petra Parker is stranger, and more fun. In 2022 a Marvel comic called Edge of Spider-Verse gave her a fairy-tale story. Princess Petra of Earth-423, daughter of Queen Mysteria, moonlights as Spinstress, a singing spider-hero designed to feel like a Disney princess. She sneaks out of the castle in a hooded disguise, gets her powers from a fairy gob-mother named Norma, and fights a villain called Bishop Octopus, a mashup of Doctor Octopus and Ursula the sea witch. At the end, Madame Web recruits her for a multiverse war.

Neither woman is transgender in the comics. Both are simply versions of Peter Parker born girls in worlds where the dice landed differently. That distinction matters, because it is exactly the gap the fans walked into.

Then a tweet made a third

In August 2026, an X user named @Zappyz_ floated a what-if. What if Spider-Man transitioned, and the single funniest possible person had to react? The funniest possible person was, obviously, Jameson. An artist named @0trebot drew the comic that made the joke concrete.

It spread the way these things spread now, which is to say all at once and then forever. One post, in all caps, demanded that someone get trans women cosplaying Petra Parker onto their desk by the next day. Another artist wrote that she had been showing up on their timeline for days, and they simply had to draw her.

The fan version keeps the essentials. Brown hair, brown eyes, the red-and-blue suit with its web pattern, the mask. She is a trans woman who used to be Peter Parker, and her superhero name is Spider-Woman. Most of the art borrows the look of the Ultimate Spider-Man Spider-Girl, which makes sense. That design is the closest thing to classic Spider-Man, just her.

The running joke is kindness

What stands out in the flood of art is how warm it is. Jameson, the designated antagonist, is not mocked for being cruel. He is mocked for being awkward. He tries. He fumbles. In the gentlest versions he is visibly proud of her and cannot bring himself to admit it. The comedy comes from a man built on bluster discovering that decency is harder work than rage.

The rest of the art does what fan art always does best. It places Petra in the poses everyone already knows: the upside-down kiss, the rooftop perch, the swing through the city. Same hero, same suit, same town. Just a girl who finally is who she always was.

Why she stuck

@Zappyz_ said the thing everyone else was quietly thinking, and he said it with the tone of a person who had not planned to start anything.

im gonna be honest i don't think i truly realized how much spider-man can work as a transfem allegory

He was understating it. Spider-Man's whole machinery is the secret identity, the double life, the fear of what happens when the people you love find out who you really are. That is a closet with webs on it. Trans readers have been saying this for years, and the wider world caught up in 2023, when Across the Spider-Verse gave Gwen Stacy a bedroom with a Protect Trans Kids flag and a scene washed in pink, blue, and white.

The film never says the word, and it does not need to. A coming-out scene does the work whether or not the filmmakers meant it. Fans read themselves into it, which is the oldest form of superhero worship there is. Petra Parker is that reading, drawn out loud.

What happens next

Whether Marvel ever makes Petra Parker official is beside the point, and probably not the point at all. The fans already did the thing they wanted. They built her, drew her, named her, and handed her to a community that clearly needed her. Quispe López, writing for Them, put it plainly: if Petra Parker ever got her own series, ten seasons would be the minimum. Same.

You do not need to have read a single issue of a single comic to see what happened here. A crowd of strangers looked at a name Marvel had left on the shelf and decided it belonged to a woman they were ready to love. So they made her. And the internet, for once, did something gentle with a thing it built.
