Why Spider-Man Keeps Working as a Trans Allegory

A secret identity is a closet. A double life is a door. Here is why trans fans keep recognizing themselves under the mask, from Gwen Stacy to the new fan-made Petra Parker.

Part of the Fandom and screen collection.

A closet door swung open with a red-and-blue suit and mask hanging inside, soft pink, blue, and white light spilling onto the floor, a small spider web in one corner, no people or text.

The person who started the Petra Parker thing was not trying to be profound. He floated a joke about J. Jonah Jameson reacting badly to Spider-Man's transition, then sat back while thousands of artists explained to him, in pictures, what he had actually tapped into.

After it blew up, @Zappyz_ confessed he had not realized how well Spider-Man works as a transfem allegory. That sentence is worth sitting with, because he is nowhere near the first person to notice.

Keep exploring

The recent fan-art conversation has its own origin story, and our guide to Petra Parker is the useful place to start before treating it as published Marvel canon.

The secret identity was always a closet

Every Spider-Man story is, at its spine, about a person living two lives and terrified of what happens when they collide. Peter Parker hides the bite, the webs, the whole second self, because he knows how the people he loves might look at him if they knew. That is not a metaphor trans people need explained. It is the thing itself.

The fear is specific. Will my parents still see me the same way? Will I lose my job, my friends, the life I built? Gwen Stacy says it out loud in Across the Spider-Verse: the people closest to her can only ever know half of who she is.

Gwen wore the flag without saying the word

When Across the Spider-Verse arrived in June 2023, viewers spotted a few things before the story even got going. There is a trans Pride flag over Gwen's bedroom door that reads Protect Trans Kids. Her police captain father wears a trans flag pin on his uniform. The scene where Gwen finally tells her father the truth about herself is drenched in the trans flag's pink, blue, and white.

The movie never confirms anything, and that is both the point and not the point. A character does not have to be canonically trans for the metaphor to land. Lilly Wachowski said much the same thing about The Matrix, years after the fact.

The Matrix stuff was all about the desire for transformation, but it was all coming from a closeted point of view.

Wachowski also revealed that the character Switch was originally going to be a man in the real world and a woman inside the Matrix. The idea was cut before the film came out in 1999. Trans fans read these stories anyway, because the stories were never subtle. They were just a little ahead of the room.

A mask built to fit anyone

Spider-Man is the rare hero whose whole pitch is that the person under the mask could be anyone. The suit hides the face on purpose. That is why the Spider-Verse films keep ending on the same idea: there is a Spider-hero in every universe, already waiting. A fan who looks at that and thinks "this one is me" is not projecting. They are finishing the sentence the story started.

Into the Spider-Verse made this literal back in 2018 by handing the mask to Miles Morales, a kid who had been told he did not fit. The trans reading takes the same open door and walks through it. Nothing had to be rewritten. The character was already built this way.

Why the art, though

Fan art does something a thinkpiece cannot. It does not argue that Spider-Man works as a trans metaphor. It just draws the woman, swinging through Queens, and lets you feel it. Petra Parker caught on because she was never presented as a statement. She arrived as a joke that turned sweet, then became a community handing each other the same idea, each version a little happier than the last.

The lovely thing is that this keeps happening, and it keeps not needing permission. The Matrix did not wait for a studio to agree. Gwen did not wait for Sony. Petra Parker will not wait for anyone either. She already exists in a hundred slightly different drawings, and that is more real than a press release.
